Atraikius

Hey thanks for the leads and info on SFC, I have seen a lot of great stuff, but I am still having problems tracking down a program to extract and view the ships in a 3d environment. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. =)

Re: Atraikius

The ship portrait files for SE IV are just .bmp files; they don't contain the necessary information to be viewed in 3D. You'd need the original object files from the program the ships were modelled in, not the .bmp files that were generated from them.

You see, there are programs that will extract the data, 3d mesh files, bmps, and other; then compile them for you. I have several 3d exploration programs, but non of them have the right plugins for SFC I and SFC II. They exisist, and I was hoping for help in tracking them down.

Would the program SEME work? If so, any hints on how to make it work the way I need it too? Or perhaps the M6 Model editor. http://www.geocities.com/ccc004/ Which would you recommend?

Re: Atraikius

The SFC2ED program works for viewing the images, but I havn't been able to get it to either zoom out or scale down the size of the ships. The m6 file is what I believe is the msMODimporter for the Milk Shape 3D program (shareware $20), it needs to be placed in the milkshape directory, along with using the milk shape ms3dsdk utility witch will allow importing of MOD files. Havn't been able to get this to work yet - keep getting an error. If you have access to 3D Max, Taldren has released a plug in for it that allows importing of MOD files, which would be the best option. The SCME utility will extract the shape of the ship from the MOD file into a lightwave format, but does not keep the bmp/pcx maps attached to the shape so yo get an all gray image.

So far, I have had the best luck just assigning the desired ship image to the fed. frigate, and taking screenshots in the scrimish games using the camera angle and zoom to get the size and angle, with my scanner software to adjust the size, and paint to clean up the background. If you happen to get the Milkshape/m6 combination working let me know though - it would be a lot easier.

I don't generally bother to read sigs past the point that I can tell that I've read them before, and don't pay much attention to who the poster is.

Re: Atraikius

Well success! http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif I got the M6 to work for me, and I have gotten permission to use some models to compile another TOS ship set. I will work on the new ship set this weekend, after I get my GD new PC to f-ing work.

I just purchased all the parts and built it Last night, and can not get the damned thing to partition the fricking HD. (Win 2k)

This is what I will have when I am done:

AMD Athalon 1.4 ghz CPU
IWill KA266 DDR Mother Board
512 megs DDR SDRAM (Got two 256 meg dimms for $60.00 bucks appeace)
Wester Digital 60 meg 7200 RPM Hard Drive (If I can ever get it to format)
Creative BLaster Live (With remote and control panel & DLBY digital)
Hercules GF3 64 Megs DDR Ram Video Card
Teac 3.5 floppy

Reused -
memorex CDRW
Creative DVD Rom
Inteli Mouse
MS Internet Ready Ergo KB
MS Digital Sound System (Speakers and Subwoffer)
Sylvania 17" Monitor
D-Link Network Card

I also bought a 300 watt case that has blue pLastic around it. Sweet looking. In all, without the Video Card, the set up cost me a little more than $500 bucks after all the rebates and stuff. + $429 for the video card. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon9.gif No rebate on it. (Been saving for a very long time.)

I assembled it Last night, and booted it. I set up the BIOS, and started installing Win 2k. I get to the format drive part, and for some GD reason, it will start the formatt, but never finishes is saying that it can not. I wonder if I need to partition is into smaller chuncks as 60 gig is an awful lot of drive space. (If I add a second 40 gig slave, I will have a Terabite http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif )I got the 60 gig WD HDrive because it had a $75.00 rebate, and only cost me a little more than a big bill to get it. Perhaps I should return it as defective??? Or it could be the fricking MB, and that would really bite...

Any whoo, I play a lot of 3d games, and just aquired 3d stuido max, and wanted to have a system, that would run all the application I want, plus would not need to be up graded for two to three years as money does not grow on trees, and credit cards belong to satan. (If you believe in that sorta thing)

Re: Atraikius

Sounds like you need to whip out the nasties and pull a real number on your hard drive. In other words, you need to use a little program called Clear Partition on it. Filename clrpart.com, size 3105 bytes. When run it completely wipes the partition sector on your hard drive leaving it cleaner than a mere fdisk and format ever will. Sometimes this procedure is necessary to get windows to install, especially NT (and in extension win2k since it's really NT5) since it's very picky about the hardware. The reason for this is that when HD manufacturerse test their drives "garbage" is sometimes left since the drive isn't always wiped succesfully after the test. I always use clrpart.com when I want to wipe a system totally clean these days. Be very careful with it though for once used there is no turning back. Ever. So backup anything you want to keep before you use it. And remember, if you have segmented your drive into several logical drives they will all dissapear forever and everything that is on them. Once run you should be able to use fdisk and then format without any problems what so ever. I never had any anyway. I do not know where this program can be found Online but if you can't find it I'll mail it to you.

A final warning:

Be very careful in it's use since it's irreversible and all data on the harddrive it is used will be lost forever. Fortunately the program asks for confirmation three times if memory serves me correctly. Just make sure you pick the right HD when running it if you have more than one installed and only want to lobotomize one of them. http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif
