Calculating armour values.

I need to know how you calculate Armour values again. It has been a long time since I have had to do it and I lost the formula. Where I got it from I am not 100% sure. I think I got from this forum however my searches through it didn't come up with anything.

thickness in cm/cosine of the angle of slope from the vertical

example using T-34 glacis

4.5cm/0.5 = 9cm

Thanks very much.

OK then, does anyone know the curve on an IS VIIs armour?

IS-7 Specs

Weight around 68 tons

130mm S-70 Main Gun (stored 30 shells)

4x 14.5mm MG

Semi-autoloader(6-8 rounds per minute) (It was not a real autoloader, more like power-assisted loading as used on various SPHs. Hence it still needed loader to place ammo on a tray.)

~1,000 horsepower diesel engine

Armor (got the data from www.tank-net.org a long time ago, and then converted it into SP format)

420mm Effective Hull Front
150mm Effective Hull Sides
150mm Effective Hull Rear
300mm Effective Turret Front
200mm Effective Turret Sides
200mm Effective Turret Rear

------

EDIT: found some info in my Steel Panthers Editing FoldeR:

HULL
Front: 210mm @ 60
Side: 100 to 150mm @ 0
Rear: 60 to 100mm @ 55
Floor: 20mm
Top: 30mm?

TURRET
Front: 210mm @ 45
Side: ~150mm @ 40
Rear: ~100mm @ 15 to 65
Top: 30mm?

-------

EDIT: here is the open office formula I use to calculate armor values:

=(B3/(COS(C3*0.017453293)))/10

C3=Slope of Armor
B3=Thickness of Armor in MM

It then outputs armor equivalent thickness in CM, which is what SPCAMO uses.

Thanks, even better.

Re: Calculating armour values.

Ok, I am back again. I can't help but feel I screwed up on some recent calculations so let me type up the formula I have been using and hopefully one of you guys will be able to tell me where I went wrong. X / Cos Y / 10.

X being the thickness of the armour in mm.
Y being the angle of the slope on the armour.

Also, What do you do when the armour is rounded?

Also, which set of armour values above is correct?

Which set of armour values is correct? None and all http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Here I may come with my part (based on some guyesstimates and so on, tried to take into account armour hardness etc):
Hull:
Front 38cm KE/42cm CE
Side 11/13, rear 13/14
Turret:
Front 27/30
Side 18/20, rear 12/13

For rounded surfaces I usually use "approximation" of 33 degree slope (not too scientific I admit http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif). More or less if I feel the exact shape mandates it.

As for the formula, yep, effective value = thickness/cosinus

Great, now I have three sets of values to puzzle over. Oh well I suppose I could synthesise the lot and come up with a mean average.

Thanks for dispelling my fears regarding the equation.

Re: Calculating armour values.

Note: My CE protection values present (in this case) "RHA" as well - lower KE is caused by me trying to fiddle also with hardness and cast armour etc.
