Stealth Retreating

Do stealth units die when they retreat from a battle where they have no friendly provinces to retreat to? Does it matter if a stealth commander manages to retreat with them?

I just crushed a bunch of vans in a game, and I want to know if there is a possibility that they are still around.

Also, does anyone know if the "fleeing deaths" are recorded on the battle report? I doubt it, but I just wanted to know if anyone knew for sure.

Yes, they die. You must have a friendly province to retreat to. Fleeing deaths are also recorded.

I think they're maybe not necessarily in the battle report, but you'll get a message that "blabla tried to flee, but got nowhere to retreat to and died" message for your commanders.

There is that. I was thinking about enemy fleeing deaths, but your own line troops also get recorded that way, you just get a message for the commanders.

Enemy fleeing deaths are recorded. You can verify this by looking at the battle report after you take a province of independents. Some of the indy troops almost always rout rather than die, yet the battle report will indicate all enemies present were killed.

If you are the one fleeing, it will not be recorded except for saying so and so died while fleeing.

In the actual battle report, it will show for example:

The enemy has conquered our province (something like that)

Units killed:
Commanders 0

Fleeing deaths are *not* reported, in general. I've tested this in games vs. myself. Independents and mercenaries die automatically when routed (as long as they reach the edge of the map), and these deaths are counted in the battle report, but if the units die only because you cut off their retreat provinces then their deaths are not reported to opponents.

So, as long as the vans had no retreat provinces they're dead whether or not they showed up in the report.

Thanks, that's what I thought http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif I'm glad to hear this! Otherwise I'd have to deal with some random hidden Vans.

I took a 350 person army to kill about 30 E9 blessed + 40 light infantry http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif

In general, flying units cannot fly away from battles and stealthy units cannot sneak away, and sailing units cannot sail away. Amphibious units WILL retreat into the ocean, and maps with "port" provinces will allow retreats back across the sea (this is because the games doesn't actually recognize the existence of "ports". It is just a map maker's trick).

Seconding or thirding that fleeing deaths aren't recorded.

I just wiped out a stealth capable army I had surrounded in my game versus llama and in the battle report it only mentioned the ones I had killed off in battle as being dead when in fact (I hope) the entire army got slaughtered.

It was a hell of a fight actually. Shadowblast versus massed infantry = ouch.
