OT: Star Trek XI
1 Attachment(s)
Well by now everyone knows that there is another Star Trek movie being made and is forecasted to be released Christmas 08.
The new series is a TOS one with new characters playing the roles that Shatner, Nemoy, and Kelly made famous. New actors... well this begs the question of who.. rumor has it that Matt Damon (Sp) is going to play Kirk.. ok.. thats cool. But who do you think will play Spock and McCoy? Dont take my word for it, look for yourselves If it were up to me, I would get Gary Sinise to play McCoy. The actor has the talent to do it, and he looks a lot like Deforest Kelly. |
Re: OT: Star Trek XI
I thought they'd decided after Nemesis that they weren't going to be making any more Star Trek movies for a while?
I'd watch it, though Star Trek movies tend to be hit-or-miss in terms of quality...sometimes with more miss than hit! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/image...ies/tongue.gif |
Re: OT: Star Trek XI
...Are there going to be actual aliens, or just humans with funny noses?

Re: OT: Star Trek XI
its a horrible idea for a movie that doesnt make any sense mccoy spock and kirk wernt at the academy with each other, kirk and spock maybe but mccoy is clearly much older....

Re: OT: Star Trek XI
You think that is bad, well here's a kicker for ya. Kirk NEVER knew Spock prior to taking command of the Enterprise from then Captain Pike. In fact Kirk went to the academy years after Spock had attended. Now this is according to Trek cannon, but we all know that history means nothing in the face of the almighty dollar. So like with Enterprise, Paramount plans to once again "re-write" history.

Re: OT: Star Trek XI
The belief that ST movies are hit and miss, which leads to the idea they are 50/50, is close to the assumption, although it is more commonly described as every even numbered film ,2,4,6 is good and the odd ones are bad. It may be that they agreed to stay clear of ST movies for awhile, if not altogether, aimed at TOS or TNG. What we have now is a redesign such as with BSG. What I am interested in is if they take the opportunity to redesign aliens. The Andorians for example are supposed to be insects but due to the limitations of SFX budgets they are blue people with antennae. It would be interesting if they took the opportunity to portray them as they did with the Insectoid Xindi (yes, yes the least said about the Xindi the better). I would particularly like it if the Klingons were made more reptilian as when Worf was devolved by that mutant T virus. That said though change one alien race change them all and spock is alien, and I highly doubt he will be made more alien except perhaps some shot of his secondary eyelids moving.

As far as McCoy goes, nothing says he couldn't have been going to the Academy later in life. Maybe he was already an "Old Country Doctor" before he decided to join Starfleet and see the universe. As long as they do it with some class and don't turn it into "Star Trek: 90210" I'll probably enjoy it. Actually, "Star Trek: 90210" could work, just do it with different characters. Don't screw with the established history of the characters we know and love. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Geoschmo |
Re: OT: Star Trek XI
You know, I always felt trek needed to get back to its roots as a "wagon train to the stars".
I think Firefly hit on that pretty good as reinventing the space western. Hey, didn't Gary Sinise say he'd like to play McCoy too? |
Re: OT: Star Trek XI
IGN reported that he was approached to play McCoy.
IGN Stroy Here is another article about it Link To be honest, from what I have read, the script for the movie is a very solid one. If they do sign these actors to play these parts I would go see the movie just to see it even if it is the worst POS ever made. Hell I might even see it twice. TOS is by far the era of star trek that I am most fond of. The writing style, the acting, and with improved special effects (As seen in the remastered versions) the series still can hold its own. What I enjoyed most was that the it was written in a way where the crew weren't afraid to argue and in cases get down and beat each other senseless. It had a solid air of military style with a flare of "we are ambassadors and we come in peace but if you're looking for a fight, we can accommodate you." It was a universe full of real challenges, it had heart and character. In later versions of ST, such as TNG and Voy everything was replaced by this BS Utopian ideology where everyone was friends and such. Until later episodes of TNG where they finally turned back toward reality a bit, I really didn't enjoy it. Conflict of spirit and life is what defines a good writing and separates the weak stories from the strong ones. Conflict about right and wrong, depth of character, and fate when written well make for some excellent TV. You don't have to have wars, just a simple mistake and a trip through the Guardian of Forever back to 1938 is all you really need. Or a single ship sent on a mission to test the defense of an enemy only to be pulled into a cat and mouse game of life and death. An old enemy coming for after you for a dish best served cold, makes for a great movie. |
Re: OT: Star Trek XI
Bring back TNG, or maybe DS9 or voyager. I hate when companies decide to "return to the begining". I don't mind the concept of the original "wagon train to the stars" but just not back in TOS time. Been there, done that, going to screw everything we all thought we knew about it up.
