Do ethereal crossbows kill anything outright if it hits, or does the defender get a MR roll?

Does penetration items increase the difficualty of rolling against items such as the crossbow. And does it increase the difficult of basic MR attacks like the mindflayer mind blast? The game mechanics probably traeat both of these the same. So if penetration helps for one, it would help for the other.

My guess is that penetration helps.

Ethereal crossbow has the Soul Slay effect, so there's an MR roll and it won't work on certain units (lifeless? constructs? I'm not sure). I don't think penetration helps item spells, but to be sure you'd want to run with the debug flags. Dom3 -dddddd etc. Unfortunately I've never gotten the flags to work for me or else I could tell you.

Imagine being an Ethereal Crossbow Mechanic. Either you're insubstantial and can't really use tools to fix the crossbow, or the crossbow is 'phased out' and you can't get a hold of it to fix it.

Pain in the arse either way.

Sounds to me like a really good excuse. Or a comedy routine.

AAA) "We now have an ethereal spell which keeps us safe but we need a way to do ethereal damage. We need to create ethereal crossbows."
BBB) "but we dont have ethereal tools"
AAA) "then we need to make ethereal tools"
BBB) "but to make ethereal tools we would need an ethereal forge"
AAA) "Ok we need to make an ethereal forge"
BBB) "but to do that we would need ethereal tools"
AAA) "you really didnt want to do this did you?"
BBB) "no, not really"
