rifle squads
how do you use your rifle squads. i have experienced they are only a effective at close range <3hexes and only if the attacked squad iss in the open. so i use reverse slope kind positions most of the time.
if i fire from a wood hex at a squad some 300 metres away will my unit remain undetected if i fire only one or two shots? in the offensive i mostly use them for spotting. an italian tankette costs less then a rifle squad and one scout combined with a few tankettes can take out a rifle company with ease. maybe the prises should be more diffenciated? |

Re: rifle squads
1. You're experiencing an example why exactly did the required effective range of rifle fire drop down during/after WWII http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
2. Depends on mutual experience/suppression/number of weapon slots firing/suppression of other enemies with FOV upon you. 3. Try doing that tankette trick against a determined infantry with antitank weapons in dense terrain http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif |
Re: rifle squads
all against the ai of course ;P. dense terrain is bypassed.....

Re: rifle squads
Good Day,
I concur with Marek Tucan, they even did studies that proved it, although I believe the average soldier already knew this from experience. It was also why weapons like the famed PPSh 41, Thompson, MP40 and StG44 etc were favoured. All our modern Assault Rifles were born of this knowledge. So your infantry aren't yellow or gold bricking they are working as they should be. Just a hint make sure you have some dedicated MG units in your mix then your ability to reach out and touch someone will be enhanced. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/skull.gif Cheers Cheers |
Re: rifle squads
I've found that the main ability of a rifle squad (on the defense) is to pin the other guys rifle squad long enough for your artillery to arrive. The rifle squad needs some reach so that the other sides guys are pinned outside the 'danger close' area of your own arty.
Once the momentum of the other sides attack is broken up, you are hopefully getting close range firefights against a few advancing troops as they come in through the smoke and artillery fire. As for destroying a rifle company with tankettes, you pin the rifle company with light artillery and then roll your tankettes up to 2 or 3 hexes away and grind squads up with close range MG fire. It helps if there is enough terrain to keyhole your tankettes so that they are not taking fire from the whole company at once (or just fire a mix of smoke and HE). |
