Modding existing map
I am trying to mod Glory of the Gods to fix some nations starting province.
Sorry for the possibly stupid question but how do you actually open the map or tga file to open it? I have tried to open it with various text editors but I get unreadable symbols. Is there a specific text editor I should use? Thanks |
Re: Modding existing map
Text editors written for M$ Windows almost universally assume that all documents are written in M$ Windows. However some documents are in fact written on Linux systems, Macs and whathaveyou. Linux systems store ASCII files (which is what data files for Dom3 are) somewhat differently than Windows does and most editors simply don't recognize the difference. I recommend the free software found here: http://jsimlo.sk/notepad/

Re: Modding existing map
The tga is a picture. You have to open it with some sort of paint program. But you probably wont need to since the picture of the map doesnt affect where nations start

Re: Modding existing map
If you're still confused, and I wouldn't blame you, there are some files in the3 docs folder in the Dom3 directory. You could also check out the Maps and Mods sub-forum here. I you might get some more detailed info there.

Re: Modding existing map
NOZIGAN, just use Wordpad. It should come installed on your computer, assuming you are using Windows. The file you want to edit is the .map file, NOT the .tga file.
Open it up and put in #specstart directives for each nation in your game. |
Re: Modding existing map
Ironhawk, wordpad will not correctly display a LOT of the .map files used by modders in this game. I don't know why, but it would seem a LOT of folks around here are not running windows systems.

Re: Modding existing map
Either wordpad or notepad should be fine. The .map file is a simple text document. It shouldn't matter what sort of system is being run by the creator or the editor. You could probably even uses a full scale word processor like word or open office writer, although I wouldn't reccomend it.

Re: Modding existing map
Yeah, I'm not sure what kinds of problems you are running into Panpiper? I've edited plenty of map files and never once had problems getting them to display. Do you want to send me your .map file? Maybe its just corrupt?
