Friday 13th fun
I've never given F13's a second thought, but today was insane!
For the past few weeks it has been quiet, with a whole lotta sittin going on. But today, the new computers downstairs started acting up. As the guy with a CS background, I went to try and fix it. "Hard disk fail" it says. So, I pick up the machine and put it on the desk nearby. I've peeled of the pLastic face, then decide to check a BIOS setting. The monitor takes so long to stabilize a picture, that before I can see what's going on, windows has booted up. Now, nothing is wrong. So, I open it up and try the cables to make sure nothing is loose, then put it back where it was and leave. No sooner had I gone up the stairs than I got a call from the office, the computer died again... same problem. So, I fiddled around with it and as soon as I put it on the desk, it worked. I left it on top of the desk, and it worked the rest of the day. Ten phonecalls before 8:30, a stack of laptops with dead batteries, printer queues going half-way across the university campus, random error Messages caused by bad ini settings, ini files resetting themselves to bad settings after you fix them, windows consistently crashing on bootup for only two hours, then working without a fix. My brain hurts. |

Sounds to me like you had "some help" from the gremlin(s). I mean the Homno sapiens variety....

Re: Friday 13th fun
Yeah. But then, my WinME machine at home started too.
I tried to add another 128MB of ram, but then winblows repeatedly crashed while loading the desktop, leaving me with a nice blank background and no programs running (not even the start menu& stuff). So stupid. It worked fine with one chip or the other, but not both. Today I went through all the permutations of ships & slots, I actually got it to boot up properly. But it seems that IE will crash if I try to run it a second time (after closing it to do something else), and it takes everything with it. Program X caused a fault in <"unknown">. Gee, what a helpful message. Does anybody know if SE runs under Linux? |
