Stealth and search?
 

I have a pretender with stealth (arch druid or something like that) and I'm using him to search. He has no units attached.

Is he stealthed while he searching? Will he fight an enemy who attacks the province?

He is not stealthed while searching (or doing anything but hide or sneak), and will fight any enemies. You could try setting him to retreat, though that has difficulties as well.

returning is much safer if you have access to it.
retreat can get him dead if he happens to have the misfortune of being an assassination target.

Thanks all. Not a big deal in my current game, but one brief "scare" prompted the question.

If you sneak, search, sneak, etc., you are visible in the turn you spend searching, but you sneak away from any kind of attack (assassins for sure, but I think this applies also to teleport/cloud trapeze attacks). You want to stay away from the frontier while doing this, so you don't get attacked by a full blown enemy army.
