I enjoy Space Empires because...

For the most part, I enjoy Space Empires because...

It's so customizable. It feels like I can create my own space game...something that I've always wanted (wished) I could do.

It's a secret. It's not published by a big company and it's not in every store. There's not millions of players, but a well defined group of people who enjoy playing the game. Just the right amount of people, so that we can still have a direct impact into what goes into the game. I think it's cool.

FOR EXAMPLE:

I live in Toronto with 5 million people. I do not know of anyone else in this forum (or community) who is also from Toronto.

(Suicide Junkie is in Kitchener-Waterloo and there was someone else from Peterborough - but I think that's as close as they get!)

Yeah, I'm that 'Peterborough' guy http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif

I love this game for 3 things: the customization ease(&moddability), the community and PBW. Without these 3 I would probally be back at BOTF or Ultimate Civ.

I love SE4 as it allows me to play the kind of game I love against the guys I grew up with. While legally Canadian, I haven’t lived there for five years, yet I can still enjoy thrashing (hopefully) the guys I knew as a kid. As we all played MOO and Empire and such games, we all think we are pretty good at them and this is the best way to settle the matter.

(Capt. Spoogy My friends and I are B.C. boys, now spread out over Kamloops, Victoria and Nairobi, Kenya, so we don’t disturb your idea of no other Toronto folks on the forum)

Here you go a player from Oshawa. And the guy sitting right next to me in the cube is from Scarbrough. P.S. Don't introduce SEIV to people at work and play PBEM games with them. It kills about 1 hour day talking about Last nights turn.

First, I'd have to agree with Captn Spoogy's first point. The customizability of the game is great. But I think even more important is the style of the game itself. It really is a STRATEGY game. You have to think about what you are doing in order to win. Most games today are more about hand-eye coordination than strategy even if it says "strategy game" on the box. The Warcraft/Starcraft series comes to mind. SE comes closer to the old cardboard chits & dice type of wargame than anything else I'm aware of in the market today.

I think what I enjoy most is strategic and tactical cliffhangers... against the AI, I'll build the bare minimum defense, composed of ships designed to survive 10:1 odds. One ship each to defend my warppoints, and I spend the rest of my time building sphereworlds in a two or three system empire.

Basically, I took some levels, and ripped out 85% of the minerals from the map. Then, I set it so that the gas you collect slowly turns into minerals.
Your army buildup happens much slower, and the individuals become more important.
Losing one siege tank, for example could cost you a minute or two of refining at one gas vent.
Territory also plays an important role; you must take control of the areas you conquer, building refineries in order to boost your economy.
Even two humans against the AI, these games can take hours, and you get a sense of accomplishment from building an empire.

I enjoy the game because I can loose my self in it for hours alowing me to forget about the troubles of the the real world and go conquering the galaxy. To emerse my self in creating new ship sets, and posting on this forum.

Ilike the stratigy, the tactics, game play, role play, and much more that SEIV has to offer.

But even with the changes you describe, it takes a lot of fast and furious mouse clicking to play either Warcraft or Starcraft. I much prefer a turn-based game where I get to think about what I need to do. I'd like to see a lot of the "spreadsheet in space" features of SE III return, in fact! http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif
