3 VS 2 Gun Artillery Section Question

In SPMBT the default off-map artillery section is 3 guns.

Due to doctrine, and a change from a 6 to an 8 gun artillery battery during the mid-80's, I'm considering changing from the current 3 gun section to a 2 gun one.

How would this effect the game?

Is there something in the AI that assumes a 3 gun section?

I know there's the "problem" that a 3 gun, 24 man 105mm section costs 175 points and a 2 gun, 16 man 105mm section costs 143.
Apparently there's some base unit cost in the Cost Calculator that's added regardless of the unit size.
But I can get around this by manually altering the cost so a 6 gun battery winds up costing the same (not the "best" solution, but it works).

Re: 3 VS 2 Gun Artillery Section Question

A section (platoon, troop) is usually half a battery, and is really only used for those armies with > 4 gun batteries.

8 gun batteries - e.g. UK arty at times - is usually organised as 2 4 gun troops.

a 2 gun section would therefore be only of use for 4 gun batteries. You would need 4 for an 8 gun bty - which
is just too many off-map units wasted, when you could have done them in 2x4's.

6 gun batteries are split into 2 sections of 3.

4 (or less, like some heavies) - all fit into 4 weapon slots of an off-map unit, so are done as one.

(On map arty uses individual guns, however mortars are usually represented by sections of 2-3 tube elements).

Cheers
Andy

Re: 3 VS 2 Gun Artillery Section Question

For the sake of simplicity going with 2x4 gun sections during the 8 gun battery period sounds easiest.

Thanks !
