OT: Any Suggestions? Display Problems

I am not sure what caused this on my workhorse HP. It has a BFG Asylum GeForce 5700 Ultra video card and without warning the screen just filled with distortion. Little specs, and dots. Since I have a screen capture of it I know its not a monitor issue and I haven't updated the Nivdia drivers since December. I think it might be the video card itself, or http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif perhaps the MB might be dying. I have noticed that if I unplug the PC it looses time on the internal clock. It might be a heat issue too. I checked the internals, they are pretty clean and free from dust. I will be uninstalling the GeForce card and go back to the MB video card in order to use the PC. If that doesn't fix the problem then I will know its a bad MB. I have my new PC now, but it likes to crash to BSOD without warning... and reboot. Something to do with how the video card works with the core duo process. Any ways if any one has a suggestion please post. I have contacted BFG support about the problem. The card came with a life time warranty but we all know how those work. |
Re: OT: Any Suggestions? Display Problems
The clock is losing time too? Sounds to me (with my limited knowledge) like a motherboard problem, seeing as the clock is located on the motherboard and it's powered by a battery when the computer is unplugged... Or you could have 2 completely unrelated issues - have you tried the video card in a second machine?

Re: OT: Any Suggestions? Display Problems
I've had something like that happen to me.
After a minute of running, semirandom crudules start popping up. I got the impression that it might be a memory leak causing data to spill over into video ram. Eventually hit would go past the bottom of the screen, and set the resolution to randomness, at which point it is game over. Tossed the video card, and it is now fine. |
Re: OT: Any Suggestions? Display Problems
Ya from all that I have been reading on the web about the problem its a video card issue. The bio's battery might be dead on my motherboard but I don't think that is causing the problem. I do have a re-occurring svhost failure dealing with my N97 on board sound card that causes the sound to stop and forcing a reboot to get it back, but that has been ongoing for a month or so. Either way, I do think its time to consider buying a second work horse and swapping HD's. Hopefully BGF will honor the warranty on the card and replace it.

Re: OT: Any Suggestions? Display Problems
Well I pulled the GeForce Card and hooked up the monitor to the on board video adapter and all seems to be working fine. So the GeForce card died. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif BFG sent me an email asking for my info and mailing address. They say the card needs to be repaired. So hopefully they will do so.

Re: OT: Any Suggestions? Display Problems
Well it looks like BFG is going to not honor their life time support and warranty pledge. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif I sent in the information from the video card, including its serial number and this is what they sent back to me.

It looks like it's branded as Asylum, so they'll probably be happy if you call it an "Asylum 5700 Ultra 128MB" card (stupid, I know).

Re: OT: Any Suggestions? Display Problems
Most tech support replies are form replies, as far as I can tell.

Re: OT: Any Suggestions? Display Problems
I once spent three months just trying to get a duplicate copy of my bill from Sprint because the tech support people claimed I didn't have a valid account number.
I eventually realized from the way one of the responses was worded that they were only looking at the Nextel wireless accounts, and not finding my pre-merger Sprint landline account. |
Re: OT: Any Suggestions? Display Problems
Hmm, might also be your power supply that is about to give up. Got another you might try?
