Demon commanders for Mictlan Late
 
I was analysing Micltan and preparing some strategies and then I've found myself with a problem: what does Mictlan Late uses to command the demons?

All the jaguars and such count as undead beings for being commanded so in general mages cannot command many of them. Ice devils from blood have problems with their chill aura. Civateteo are not easy to summon as they require not nationals paths. You can summon an horde from hell and use the devil.. but seems a little bit overkill.

You begin to see options at levels 6.- coutals, but is conjuration not blood http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif.

So my question is this: for your early raids with demons (research level <6) what do you use as commanders? And later on?

You mean the Jag Fiends/Beast Bats, right?

You want death leadership, not magic leadership. Just summon Mound Kings, it's only D1 to cast, so a Tlahuelpuchi can do that. Or Mictlipoctli, or any D1 indy/mercenary mage. You might want to make a D2 revenant so he can make more mound kings, if you use a D2 mercenary.

If you've got extremely limited death income then you might want to just make one skull staff and summon Civateteos instead.

But before B6 you might want to think about whether you really need to be summoning Bats/Fiends, or if you should save your slaves up for some Onaquis at blood 7. There's nothing you need Fiends/Bats for that Jaguars/Eagles can't handle, unless you need Bats to go up against Eye Shield thugs, or high Fiend/Bat MR versus Rlyeh, or something unusual like that.

My idea was to make a change to blood economy and basically stop recruiting jaguars/eagles and switch to summons. Key thing is that I need to stop upkeep because the game is stalling and demons are free once summoned.

But many thanks for the ideas, I'll check all the low level death summons for commanders (funny that there isn't any low level demon for summon but there are many undead).

In the late game, the Vampire Lord is great for this role.
Give him a skull staff and he can cast darkness, which turns any mortal unit into chaff. Give him some blood slaves, and he can boost your demons with Blood Lust and the like. Group him with a King of Rain with Boots of Flying, and then you can bless the entire group. All together, this group can lead ~220 flying demons, and can kick the stuffing out of most armies.

Commander needs to be a priest to be able not to take additional commanders.
In my game with mictlan I empowered a Tlahuelpuchi in death and summoned Civateteos. Civateteo is an excellent commander for the demon groups and those groups with decent bless (I had W9D9 PoD) can take out almost anything. Ozelotles are really great but bats, I think, are not worth using, 'cause your national troops are better.
And you really need to give Civateteo the Winged shoes. That's where your national heroes help. Mictlipoctli will help to summon civateteos without empowering and Tepeyocatl should be empowered in air, search sites and later forge winged shoes for you. Air is really important part of this strategy. Another way to get it is through Obscuro merc.
