Technical Problem

Hi All,

I want to start a PBEM game of Dominions 3 with my nephew and am having a small problem. I have read in the manual that all my games get saved in a /savedgames folder and that inside my /savedgames folder I should find a /newlords folder which contains my pretender files.

The problem is - I have searched all the directories on my hard drive and have neither a /savedgames nor a /newlords folder. The dominions3 folder does exist but it doesn't contain either of these folders.

I am running the game under Windows Vista - does it put the folders somewhere else?

I know this is probably a silly question but I have been looking now for a long time.

Regards,

Ray Fischer

Re: Technical Problem

I bet it's that stupid "Virtual Storage" again. I used Vista to play Dominions for a while, and instead of saving stuff like .2h-files in the program's folder as a naif like me expected, it saved them in the user's folder under AppData\Local\VirtualStore if memory serves. (As in, C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Domin ions3)

(I understand this is part of the heightened security or something, not allowing programs to write files anywhere without special permission. I'm glad I only have to use Vista occasionally, the PoS that it is http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif )

Re: Technical Problem

Using the search function on "vista", there's another "Technical problem" thread on the first page.

Other ways to reach the application data path is to enter %appdata% into the address field of your windows explorer. Or is that does not work: %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data

Re: Technical Problem

I asked this question a while ago (not that I use Vista, but a player in a game I was organising did), and this was a useful response I got (from Ballbarian):

Quote:

This is where it is for me.

C:\Users\{profile name}\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\dominions3\savedgames

If you go to one of your dominions saved games folders, such as
C:\Program Files\dominions3\savedgames\CasualPBEM
there is link in the explorer window called compatibility files. If you click on it, it will bring you to where the actual files are stored. (the first link I gave)

The easy way I hear is to not install dominions into the program files folder.

Thanks everyone. That was the information I was looking for. I have found the folders now.
