Video Problems

Hi again.

I keep getting this fuzzy screen that looks like the colors were drawn with crayons. The splash screen looks normal, as does the main menu screen, but as soon as I move my mouse on the main menu screen the whole screen turns neon green and yellow.

I have been messing around with different screen resolutions by manually setting them in my display options. I thought I fixed it by simply adjusting my resolutions to 800/600 because I was able to play a game. But today after I started it up it did the same thing.

I use a nvidia 7900gt with all the lastest drivers.

I looked in the forums and have only been able to find a few tid bits on this.

Re: Video Problems

A few more details about your system and what version of Windows you are using would be helpful.

Re: Video Problems

Are you trying full screen?. If so - try windowed mode and see if the problem goes away.

If full screen mode, or trying windowed mode to cover the full screen - then have you got the windows task bar in the correct position and mode (not in auto-hide mode, and only in the default position at the bottom of the screen, one bar high.)

Cheers

Re: Video Problems

Yes, it was in Full Screen, window mode didn't have the effect.

I am able to get it to work every so often. I'm not sure exactly what I am doing to get it to work. I've tried things like messing with the res sets, restarting computer, setting everything back to default, re-installing the patches, ect..

I get the game to work, so I play, save a game then when I start the game back up it switches over on the main screen about 2-3 seconds after it comes up.

When I get home tonight I will have to look into what you were refering to Andy, thanks for the help.

Ok, Ive tried everything offically. I've read everything that is listed here that I could find but I am still stumped.

I can get the graphics to work after switching settings over and over. But for the most part the game loads graphic are fine, then 3 second later they switch to DOS like green graphics.

When I do get the game to work I have no idea why it works, because its never they same thing I did to get it to work.

Ive checked my tasked bar sets, I've right clicked and messed with the compatablity settings, I've patched and repatched the game and my video card, I've messed with my graphics display settings.

Something keeps switching my video card off it seems and its running on just the built in video graphics. Thats all I can think of.

Any ideas?

Re: Video Problems

It seems to be your video system - card and/or drivers then.

If it runs OK in windowed mode then use that, and not full-screen. If you have the CD version, you can set the windowed mode to higher modes than 800 by 600. I use 1280 by 1024 since that is the natural resolution of my flat screen monitor.

The only other thing I can think of is task-tray applications that pop up little displays in the task tray when doing things. Avast anti-virus is an example - I have this, and it pops up a little light bulb now and then, as does mailwasher if it is left to check mail every few minutes. One or both of these, seems to mess with the 256 colour windows pallete if there is a full-screen game going on. Switching them off (after pulling the network cable since if the AV is off, you dont want to be connected to the cable!:)) - removes the problem in full-screen.

Cheers
Andy

Re: Video Problems

Just after I posted last night I was able to get full screen mode to work by first loading up window mode, then shuting it down and loading up full screen mode. Dont ask me why, but it worked.

Yes, window mode is clunky for me. Full screen rules.

Thanks for the help again, I'll look into the other things you listed tonight.

Re: Video Problems

Ok, after messing with this for the past couple of weeks I can still only guess at this.

In order to get the game running in Full Screen Mode, I have to reset the setting numerous times.

I think that the game is trying to use a onboard video card that is built into the motherboard. After resetting everything and restarting 2-10 times it finnally tries to use my self installed one. Sometimes, it will switch back to the horrible graphics after a few seconds, sometimes it will just continue to use my GF7900.
