reverse engineering query

If one race has developed Physics level 2 and builds ships with shields, can an ally reverse engineer shield tech, or do they need to research physics level 2 themselves?

They would still need to research physics 2 as a prerequisite for shield technology. If they had physics 2, then analyzing any ship with more advanced shield technology would give them a level in shield tech.
