Intel Duo Core PC\'s

I am becoming a firm believer that Intels Duo Core processors are not all that great for gaming. That or they don't work well with Nvidia 8800GT cards running XP sp3. I should have went with Vista.

it could be the game is not new enough to read you are using Dou Core processors

Intel's Core 2 Duo is the best CPU architecture around for home PCs these days; AMD's offerings fall way behind. They work well with 8800GTs for most people, Vista or XP.

Then it would run in a single thread on a single core and it wouldn't matter. There aren't actually any single core CPUs out there that are faster than the dual core stuff Intel and AMD make these days, cause they gave up on single-cores on the high end long ago.

What exactly is the problem? It must be pretty dire if Vista is looking like a better choice...

Vista is a perfectly acceptable choice.

Sorry to hear you are having trouble. For the record I am using a Core 2 Duo E8400 with a 7800GT and Vista Ultimate SP1 and am very happy. Performance is good across the board and SE5 is not a problem either. I have to disable desktop font smoothing for a good frame rate, but don't have to touch anything like core affinity or similiar.

Assume that I do have the lastest drivers and updates for all the games. I think its a video card issue and not a cpu one.

Re: Intel Duo Core PC\'s

I had some teething problems when I started out with this system - I had lockups in all games after a minute or so, usually reported as a video driver error and sometimes restarting my system. I chased around the guru3d.com forums for a long time without luck, until I finally cracked the problem. It was a CPU temperature issue! The stock cooler that came with the CPU was simply not up to the job and was overheating and causing the lockups.

The errors had all been misleading - I bought a large Akasa cooler and my system was immediately fixed for good. Are you the default cooler too? You might want try monitoring your temperatures if you haven't already...

I'd agree - I had a similar issue which turned out to be overly aggressive overclocking. If you have overclocked the videocard, try setting it back to default frequencies. If they're at default, try running your system with the sidepanel off and a fan pointing at the card, just to rule out heat buildup.
