Helico hunting Aircraft?

I was just thinking that it is a bit hard to destroy helicopters when you're not propperly equipped for that, and i thought: "is it possible to create Helicopter killing aircraft?? Like creating air to air missles???

Things with wings only attack ground units. Helos can kill other helos. Did that in my last PBEM.

Many years ago when I was playing with the OOB editor I did try to put SAM systems on Aircraft. IIRC it actually worked.

Of course there's several Major points to consider.
1) Scope: why would dogfighting aircraft come down so low to nail helicopters? It really is outside the scope of the game.
2) It may well cause major weirdness in the game as its something the game is not designed for.
3) These tests where several Versions ago, when it was still a DOS game.

There's also the fact that to get this anti-helicopter kit you need to buy it at the buying stage, so you mights as well invest in more SAM launchers.

Let's not forget there was a Hind shot down by Paveway GBU during the Desert Storm ;) IIRC, back in SP2, I saw once aircraft attack a helo (in normal gameplay) but was pretty rare event. Anyway, air is more useful usually at ground pounding.
As for helos, if no SAMs available, recommend AA machineguns in large enough concentrations.

A hovering, landed or very slowly moving helo at low altitude can be attacked as a ground target - including with LGB, bombs, strafing etc. A tank sabot round or a MILAN through a hovering Hind is rather effective :)!.

Also arty fire can do damage or suppress helos at very low esp if hovering, slow or landed.

Infantry can drive them off with small arms fire at 1-2 hexes if they get too close too, unlike the original games.

Best helo counter assuming they can avoid the enemy AAA is another helo with cannons, AGL or rockets. Chase down the enemy helo, close to 1 hex and shoot it at point-blank.

Cheers
Andy

Re: Helico hunting Aircraft?

Regarding tanks attacking low altitude helicopters, I thought I saw somewhere (can't remember where and can't find it again) that this only applied to weapons with a high Fire Control (30+ ?) and was based on experience of M1s in the first Gulf War. IIRC the coding was relaxed slightly to allow the top end Russian tanks the same ability as the best western tanks. Now I'm seeing all sorts of armoured vehicles taking pot shots at helicopters with main weapons as well as AAMGs. In my current game a T-55A used the 100mm main gun(FC 5, Stab 2, RF 6 ACC 14) to take out a helicopter that I moved from low altitude hover (no LOS) to high altitude, range approx 1700m.

Is this correct for the way tanks are now coded to fire at helos? If that is the way the code is written then fair enough, but it seems odd. I haven't tried the reverse trick with my Centurions as there aren't any enemy helos about (yet).

cheers,

Tim

Re: Helico hunting Aircraft?

Mobhack Help, Units tab, description of "Stabiliser".

A hovering helo which pops up to high altitude is still hovering and so near anyone can shoot at it.

Helos need to have moved a few hexes to be immune from non-AAA fires from weapons with stabiliser, RF and FC that are high enough to allow engagement of them.

Thanks Andy, I'll revise my tactics.

im new o the forum so im going over the threads...sorry if im bouncing stuff up for no good reason. i did put some sidewinders on israeli F15I as a test and actually in a very controlled test it did shoot down Mi-6s and even AH-64. makes for some strange encounter though with the F15 "chasing" the helicopter across the map(i had 2 sidewinders on weapon slots 1-3 and left the gun on). actually its not unprobable that a unit herrased by helicopters would call for air support to clear the sky. oh yeah, one of the AH-64 shot down the F15, so i guess anything can happen:)
