Disscussion about Writing Guides

Ok, we all have a lot of knowledge, and that knowledge is often shared here. However, every few weeks a new player comes and asks the same questions. What I was thinking about doing was asking everyone to compile a guide for their particular speciality.

IE, I like to make ship sets therefore, I would write a guide to building ship sets.

Someone else could write one for installing them.

Another person could write a guide for EMP editing and set up.

We have a MOD MAKING Guide already thanks to TG, and many many others, but not one for other things such as I have mentioned. I would hope that this thread gets some Posts in it as this would be a great tool to add to add to an all round SEIV game guide.

Your thoughts?

Certainly a FAQ would be a good idea. It would save lots of repeated answers to the newbies, as a FAQ is supposed to. Maybe we could get Shrapnel to post it on this site? Going for a complete "Guide" seems a bit excessive for on-line. It might aid people who have illegitimate copies of the game, too. And besides, you might find the guide pre-empted by something official in the not-too-distant future.

There is one problem with making a FAQ and that is 9/10ths of the time, the people asking the questions rarely read the FAQ.

Of course not. That's the very definiton of newbie! http://www.shrapnelgames.com/ubb/images/icons/icon7.gif But this is still what a FAQ is for. When some newbie Posts the same tired old question you don't have to type out an explanation anymore. You just post a one-line reply.

"This is answered in item ## of the FAQ. You can read the FAQ at <Url>."

See? Simple. And the explanation in the FAQ will be detailed and well written so that the newbies understand properly. Meaning it will be better for them, too. You never know if the answer that someone tosses off "the top of their head" will be a good one or not.

There's a QNA section in MM's page http://www.malfador.com/se4qna.html

Maybe we can get them to add our FAQ with them.
