low visibility
 
does anyone have experience of low visibility games like 1-5 (or 1-20 might do too)

how strong it affects and how did ur battle go and what units were good etc ? how strong was the difference between vision 20 and 30 etc

i have rad that (if i remember correctly) visibility means maximum range u can spot things meaning if visibility is 1 u cannot spot anything over 1 even your vision is 100 or would it mean that if ur vision is 20 and visibility is under or 20 the maximum range to spot is 20 or something ? how does that work

i have never played a low vision game and im interested in how things go in those kind of games

maybe trying one in future

Vision means your units can see that far so if vis is 5 can see 5 hexes if unit has vis rating of zero. If unit has a vis rating it can always see out to its rating. So at vis 5 a unit with a vis of 20 can still see 20 hexes. Low visibility means less chance of seeing through terrain like trees & if very low think makes spotting harder air strikes less effective as cant find target or shorter attack run.
Effects battle a lot as dont have to worry about being spotted by units on hill or whatever in distance so manovering safer, can be quite bloody as units don't see till on top of. You need to be very aware of opponents vis capabilities as if longer than yours very hard. Radar AAA is unafected by vs air
Certainly worth playing as diffrent challenge

I don't remember the exact rules but basically if your vision is 100 and the visibility is 1, you could still see things 100 hexes away. But if your visibility was 0 you'd pretty much only see 1 hex ahead of you.

I had an interesting generated campaign battle in the late 60s with limited visibility. It really made all the difference in a battle when my visibility 0 tanks couldn't spot the enemy tanks that had visibility 20 and were firing from outside the range my tanks could see. I had to move around my three precious 20 visibility tanks around the battlefield trying to manouver around and spot the enemy tanks and kill them while my other units pretty much had to resort to engaging the enemy in short firing range only terrain or trying to sit still and ambush the enemy tanks.

All in all, it was one of the best generated battles I've had and I can wholeheartedly recommend a limited visibility battle. It really makes some interesting battles, especially when the engaged armies have different level of night vision equipment. You really have to plan your tactics well if you want to defeat opponents who can see you two hundred meters further away than you can see them.

Essentially, a unit can see up to a number of hexes equal to:

- the visibility rating of the map OR
- the vision rating of the unit

whichever is higher.

You can only do spotting and direct fire at enemy in hexes you can see (you can still do the Z-fire against hexes you cannot see) and indirect fire tends to be more accurate if the spotter can see the target hex.

Low visibility (5 or below) tends to mean that infantry firefights tend to be quite deadly, due to happening at pretty close ranges, if both sides are relying on unaided vision.
