Does Soul Vortex hurt your own units too?
 

I just received a Bone Armor as an event, and I am wondering if I ought to use it because all of my commanders currently are missile batteries and will hence be surrounded by units that protect them.

Soul vortex will hurt your own units as as well.
This can actually be used to your advantage sometimes. If you have soul vortex on a mage and sett cheep expandable units to guard commander it will drain life from the surrounding units and reduce fatigue.

bone armor is in my opinion best used for SC's especially if going up against hordes of chaff, then it's like having regeneration and reinvigoration at the same time.

i would advise you invest in an SC chassis, give it two frost brands(or fire brands if the enemy is cold resistant) and the bone armor, and get some buffs on him like luck and quickness. you should then be able to take out any number off chaff.

Soul Vortex can get you over max HP, even 20-40% over.
