Counter battery fire
At present for a unit to counter battery fire it must have a range greater than targeted battery would it be possible to adjust this to say within 10 or 15 hexes.
i.e a unit with range 200 could fire on a unit with range 210 but not 211 if used 10. Reason it shows unnerving military forethought to be able to place your guns to cover the battlefield & yet be out of range of opponent when the diffrence in range is only 50-100m as is often the case. If arty ranges are abstracted due to game restrictions then understand. Last post for a while as that about covers my thoughts on game improvements that might be possible. As you said, off-map range values are abstractions where the only rule is that e.g. 211 is higher than 210. IIRC, in the old games (maybe still in WinSPWW2?) the rule of thumb was that 1 range point equals 1 km over 10km (base value for offmap). I don't know what the current official rule for this is.
