Range of Weapon 107 (8 inch Gun) OOB12 (US Army)
The weapon range of 8 inch gun (weapon 107) of US army is 213, while that of 155mm gun M2 (weapon 104) is 220. But the 8 inch gun has a much longer range than 155mm gun M2.

Re: Range of Weapon 107 (8 inch Gun) OOB12 (US Army)
And please don't quote Wikipedia find a "real" source
For the record Wiki rates the 155mm gun M2 with a range of 23,221 m (25,395 yds) and the 8 inch howitzer with a range or 16,800 m (18,373 yds) so if you use Wiki the 155 outranges the 8 inch by just over 7000 yards so if you have a source that shows it's the other way 'round please do share it with us Don |
Re: Range of Weapon 107 (8 inch Gun) OOB12 (US Army)
I'll get the specific numbers when I get home, but I think this might've been a copy-paste "error."
The information I will provide is from: Hogg, Ian V. The American Arsenal. Mechanicsburg, PA: Stackpole Books, 2001 The weapon in question is 8in Gun (Weapon 107), not 8in Howitzer (Weapon 103 IIRC). The 8in Howitzer M1 has a shorter range than the 155mm M2, as does the 240mm Howitzer M1918 (around Weapon 114 IIRC, but I'll get that later as well). The 240mm Howitzer and the 8in Gun have the same range in game, though the range of the 8in weapon is about twice that of the 240mm (16K yards v 33K yards from what I remember looking at it this morning). I think its combination of confusion of the two 8in weapons (both designated M1, because of their respective series) and the 8in and 240mm weapons (which shared the same carriage, and in game the majority of their stats). |

Here is the summary of US heavies, from Osprey - New Vanguard 131: US Field Artillery of World War II (Zaloga), pg. 24.

Re: Range of Weapon 107 (8 inch Gun) OOB12 (US Army)
So the weapons in question in the US Army OOB are as follows:
103 8in Howitzer 104 155mm Gun M2 107 8in Gun 115 155mm How M1 116 240mm Howitzer The following assumptions are made about weapons 103, 107, and 116: 1) That weapon 103 is the 8in Howitzer M1, 2) That weapon 107 is the 8in Gun M1, and 3) That weapon 116 is the 240mm Howitzer M1. There is the possibility that the 8in Howitzer could be one of the Mk series, and that the 240mm Howitzer could be the M1918 series, but both of these seem doubtful to me. Also, relatively minor modifications to the M1A1 155mm Gun led to the M2, so I'm going to use that data as well, seeing as only the M1A1 is mentioned in my source. Ranges from the previously mentioned source: 155mm Gun M1A1: 25,395 yards (No Max/Min specified) 8in Howitzer M1: 18,510 yards (No Max/Min specified) 8in Gun M1: 35,000 yards (Max. Approx.) / 22,000 yards (Min. Approx.) 240mm Howitzer M1: 25,225 yards (Max.) / 8,450 yards (Min.) |
Re: Range of Weapon 107 (8 inch Gun) OOB12 (US Army)
Thanks for the data your guys provided.
I did checked with wiki because I don't have any "real" resource. It shows the range of 8 inch gun to be 35,635 yards(32km), which out-ranged 155mm gun M2 by a large margin. But I also feel it is not a strong source so I didn't list it. |

I use DOGPILE to search, I find it quite good at Military Topics, it is 10 to 20 or so different search engines in one including G#&&^%. Another idea is start haunting some Military History Forums. And of course, the most expensive option is books, some general stuff, and then, what you are into to. Yard Sales and Used Books stores can be your friends here. Just some ideas since you seem to have a genuine interest. Hope this helps. Bob out:D |
Re: Range of Weapon 107 (8 inch Gun) OOB12 (US Army)
I agree "wiki" isn't a good source in and of itself, but you can often come up with more reliable sources by checking the references listed or external links. Wikipedia can be a step to more reputable sources.

Re: Range of Weapon 107 (8 inch Gun) OOB12 (US Army)
Just a Note, the Ian Hogg book, The American ARsenal is a re-print of a WWII eara overview of the US weapons syestems in standard or substitute standard use. They only MORE factual source on the ranges of the weapons would be the TMs on the actual weapons themselves.
