favorite maps sizes

I'm looking for some suggestions on preferred map settings for winSPWW2. I seem to have hit the limit with a map of 200 x 200 but to be honest I really don't have a clue as to how or if you should tailor the map to the size of your core when you're playing a campaign. As an example I've got a Germany vs Soviet Union campaign going where I'm the Soviets and it's August 1941. I've got a core of 1 medium tank company, 1 infantry leg company and 1 motorized infantry company. I've thrown in 2 platoons of 37mm guns and 2 sections of SPAA for support. Most of the time I load the leg infantry onto the tanks so that I can cover lots of ground. Would a map of 200 x 200 be too big for 3 companies to cover in real life? I like a large map as the AI seems to have more room to surprise me but if there are better sizes to use I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks in advance

Steve

200x200 seems huge, for 3 companies, and would have lots of scrolling.
But every one has their preferences.

I run a 100x100 map with a battalion sized force similar to what you have: 1 armor company, 2 infantry companies and support units which come up around company strength. This still gives me room to maneuver without turning it into a game of blind man's bluff.

Depending on the type of battle, the AI forces seem to be sparse on a Defend and can stretch from top to bottom on an Assault. It really depends on what you want. On a small map with large forces, you end up with a knife fight in a phone booth where brute force is the order of the day. Larger maps with smaller forces give you maneuver room. From a realism perspective, you probably can find examples of both during World War II.

Hi Codman,

With the force you describe, I'd probably go with a map between 100x100 (keep in mind 100x100 is a quarter of the size of 200x200) to 120x140 maximum.

But that's just my preference...and I like room to manouvre.

That force of yours will be 'all at sea' on a map 10KM x 10KM. I don't recall what the 'normal' frontage is for a battalion, depends on the theatre, terrain, objective etc. but I'd imagine it was somewhere between 1KM to 3KM.

Thanks for the responses!! I'll try reducing the map size and see what happens although I fully intend to avoid the "knife fight in the phone booth" stuff as that's way too close for me... ;)

I don't know. I've got one of those "win at all cost" campaigns going and my Tigers (king and otherwise) might have some fun. :D Granted, the Brits have those stupid paits and the US have bazookas. Still...
