In the exe itself. Its not encrypted text so you can easily see it with a viewer. The various text parts of the game are mostly grouped together so finding one name will find you all of the names in that commander-type (thats how the names are grouped)

Someone with a linux system can easily pull it for you with the strings command.

However if you want to change lists of names in game or add names to certain lists you can find the appropriate commands in the modding.pdf file which comes with the game.

The needed commands can be found in 2 places
7.15 to set the list from which a creature will have it's name selected
and in
11 to edit or clear these lists or add names to certain lists.

Personally I'd not mess around in the exe file and these mod commands are meant to be used for modding (and means you can just turn the mod on or off and not change your whole game) setting specific names for commanders or other uniques can't be done (well not by me at least) in this way though.

In addition, if you enable renaming when you create a game (same screen as independent strength), you can press 'r' when viewing a commander's description to give him a custom name.

Hello, and thank your for your answers.

I tried to use modding commands, but all I managed to get what the possibility to put a name from a culture group, not for example choose in the list of all c'tissian names the one I want to use.
Is that possible to do with modding commands ?

This seems to be a good solution. But what do you call a viewer ?

Thanks in advance

The only way you can do it is use either name group 127 or 128, clear them, add only the one name you want and assign that to a unit. Otherwise you're stuck to renaming the commander after recruitment.

Were you trying to choose a spesific name for a hero unit? That's impossible ATM, and it's been requested many times. :(

It is possible in map commands. So you might consider creating a scenario map to play to go along with your mod. The map commands nicely finish out many of the mod options. The mod commands lets you make things available to the game, and the map commands let you set the game settings.
