Component families
 
Okay, so I was modding some life support and crew components so I could make some more efficient crew components to reduce their hull space and such and I put them in the same families as the life support and crew quarters components. Loaded up a max tech game, checked the list of components, set "only latest" and the original crew and life support components plus each component type I added in still show up, instead of just the latest.

Do the abilities and the tech required have to match? That's the main thing that seems to be different from the original ones and the advanced Versions I'm trying to mod into the game...

The abilities don't have to match, BUT you do have have to put them right after the component of the same family. A gap-i.e. another component in between- results in what you got.
