Updating midgame
Is it possible to update the game version while a game is in progress without ****ing up that game?
And if it is possible, what works in MP? 1) All players have submit turn files using version N-1. Server is updated from N-1 to N and host is run. Players update to N before getting the new turn files. 2) Some players update to N before submitting their turn files. Otherwise 1. 3) All players update to N before submitting their turn files. Otherwise 1. |
Re: Updating midgame
Oh, yeah, we do it all the time. Should not mess up anything. (as long as all players upgrade, and of course the server upgrades).

Re: Updating midgame
Pleasingly, it's quite robust. The server should update first. Players can take their current turn using either the old or the new version. On following turns they will be forced to upgrade, since they won't be able to open their trn files without doing so.
So, any of (1), (2) or (3) will work. |
Re: Updating midgame
In the case of games running full time (like on Dom3Minions.com) the game has to be taken down on the server, updated, then restarted. Updating while games are running causes some strange results. But if any players wished it there would be no problem keeping a copy of the old version running to complete a game without updates.
