A question about Global Enchantments
I'm not entirely clear on how overcasting global enchantments work when you are casting another enchantment. Say I am in a situation with all the global slots filled and I try to cast earth blood deep well. Will my casting replace one of the existing enchantments, even if none of them is Deep Well? Does it compare the raw number of gems used to cast the two? Do I have to cast dispel first on one of them?
I checked the FAQ and manual and so far I can't locate the answer. |

Yes, if it wins the DRN roll - Does it compare the raw number of gems used to cast the two? No, it compares excess gems. There is a DRN roll (2 random numbers as usual). The excess gems (if any) when the global is/was cast are added to the DRN. Base gems does not matter. Each level of the caster above the base level required for casting adds 5 to the DRN roll. If the new (DRN+gems+5*level) is higher than the (DRN+gems+5*level) for the old GE, your new GE replaces the old one. If you're not overcasting the same GE, which GE out of the 5 is picked at random. - Do I have to cast dispel first on one of them? No, and even if you do, you're not guaranteed that your Dispel will be cast before your GE is cast. |
Re: A question about Global Enchantments
Wow thanks for the detailed and quick answer vfb. I'm assuming blood slaves are treated the same as normal gems for the purpose of blood globals?

Re: A question about Global Enchantments
I have another related question.
"If you're not overcasting the same GE, which GE out of the 5 is picked at random." so if say all the spots were filled, and one of them was well of misery with 100 gems into it, and another was sea of ice with 35 into it, and Alpine tried to cast earth blood well with 80 gems, he is equally likely to end up rolling against WoM as SoI? |

Yes, unfortunately you can :(

Re: A question about Global Enchantments
The rulebook actually states that the drn for global overwrites is a single die, not two. No idea if it actually IS one die or not, but there's at least some reason to suspect that it may be different from the other random die rolls in the game. Aside from that vfb nailed everything in his post. (And if someone has tested it to be with 2 dice please speak up about that specifically, I haven't heard anyone mention it before now as being a departure from the rulebook, but as we know there are quite a few inaccuracies in the book.)

Re: A question about Global Enchantments
Aside:
The rulebook distinguishes between a drn (1 die) and a DRN (2 dice). drn shows up in the section on casting globals, but that's not the only place. I believe it also shows up in the blood hunting equation for the number of slaves captured. -Max |
Re: A question about Global Enchantments
I believe its a drn - but the only way to check this for sure would be to overcast a global by like 3 gems and check the frequency of success...
