Possessing the item gives you an increased chance of being able to return from Inferno, Kokytos or the Void. E.g. Tome of the Lower Planes gives a 50% bonus on escaping from both Inferno and Kokytos and the Dimensional Rod gives a bonus to escaping from the Void.

But they always did that. I assume that this recent patch note would mean that something new has been added.

I don't remember what exactly, but some other items also have some of these bonuses. I'm at work right now, so I don't have lch's item data dumps available.

I think Brazen Vessel also help return from inferno.
Don't see the point in making these changes, they are absolutely insignificant and hardly usable in any situation.

I'm pretty sure Lightless Lanterns got a bonus for returning from the void in that patch update.

Oh bugger! I just threw out all my lanterns a few turns back when I maxxed research, and I've got Kings trying to summon out of R'lyehs Void Gate. I should have kept a few. :(

Anyway, I like these weird little thematic quirks.
