SCUDs for WinSPMBT?

Hi!

Has any one ever developed a large, SCUD/Scaleboard-type missile for use in SPMBT? I read it's original use was to attack bases in the rear, but can such a missile be used in a battle-field the scale of SP?

No. too devastating effect, and too big for a Bn. commander :(

It's not a battlefield weapon. Unless you launch hundrends of them, very small effect against an army.

Just use bombers to simulate a SCUD attack.
Not like SCUDs are precision weapons.

A SCUD-C CEP is around one kilometer, which means that it can fall anywhere on a typical SPMBT map and there is no way to reproduce that kind of inaccuracy even if one wanted.
Therefore it cannot be done in the game, just as it cannot be used for such purpose in reality.
Pretty much the only kind of such weapons that might fit the game engine, game scope and reality would be something along the lines of some variants of the Iskander and similar weapons.
With both terminal guidance and conventional warheads capable of affecting area targets (cluster for example) it might conceivably be used for a SPMBT engagement.

That'd be overkill
btw, quote from wikipedia:
Quote:

Intended targets

The system is intended to use conventional warheads for the engagement of point and area targets, including:

* hostile fire weapons (missile systems, multiple launch rocket systems, long-range artillery pieces);
* air and missile defense weapons, especially stationary;
* fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft at airfields;
* command posts and communications nodes;
* troops in concentration areas;
* critical civilian infrastructure facilities.
even the Iskander with its great accuracy wouldn't be used as artillery, now i wonder what's the use of the SCUD with its accuracy

Well not really: read again carefully:

multiple launch rocket systems, long-range artillery pieces
Which we have in the game.

Quote:

air and missile defense weapons
Things like S-300 and Patriot batteries, which again we have in the game as on map assets.

Note: I am not arguing it should be added in the game. Russia has just a dozen of free weapon slots left, it would not be economical to add a weapon which is just barely within the game scope.

Nuclear strike capability for Front/Army commanders. FROGs did the same for divisional commanders. When you are packing a bucket of istant sunshine accuracy is not as important (unless you are going after hard targets.)
Of course if you are shooting at city size targets, and some military bases are big as cities, then you can get some mileage out of conventional warheads.

Re: SCUDs for WinSPMBT?

I have included some heavy artillery rockets and short-range TBMs in some OOBs of the Cold War Mod, though they are always restricted to player-only use.

The main goal is to have them available to scenario designers who don't want the trouble of editing and shipping their own OOBs. In some special scenarios, it can be useful as a first strike, say when you are defending or mounting an infiltration against a highly strategical place. Not at the center of the scope of WinSPMBT, but still interesting from time to time and technically feasible.
As a little bonus, you can use these systems as the ultimate counterbattery unit, as they have more range than any arty and generally enough HE kill to wipe a complete battery off the board.

Just to be clear, I'm only taking here about tactical artillery rockets (more FROG than Scud) or more modern short-range TBMs like the MGM-21 Lance or the Russian SS-21 Tochka (again, not Oka or Iskander).
As stated above by everyone, real ballistic missiles have nothing to do in a WinSPMBT game, and are absolutely not possible to model realistically, both in terms of accuracy and firepower (and I'm only talking about conventional warheads).

A corollary to the modeling problems is that these things are bloody useless in game terms. A handful of 500kg HE warheads falling all over the place with an accuracy more in the FROG ballpark may destroy a building or two and dazzle some troops, but they are much less battle-winners than regular arty. And strike aircraft at least do some aiming before dropping the same amount of ordnance.
