Maxims, Quotes, Rules and good ideas
 

This quote made me think that it might be fun to start a thread of maxims, saying, rules, or just good old one liners that may help new players, entertain experienced players and/or confuse all players. I’ve started the discussion with things I’ve screamed at myself when things go wrong and some other rules from various people.

1. Make sure AFVs are sufficiently suppressed before trying a close assault.
2. Make sure infantry are sufficiently suppressed before moving AFVs next to them.
3. Russian infantry is cheap and inexperienced. This means buy a lot because you’re going to need them.
4. Make sure you have enough transports.
5. After you open fire, move or you’ll get rained on.
6. Never, ever, underestimate your opponent.
7. Never, ever, ever underestimate the AI.

50 cal HMG's on a ridgeline can totally ruin a guys day.

I do have a small collection of warfare quotes.

There are some really good ones among the 100 that come with SPWW2

But I've been trying (well not trying very hard) to collect another hundred so I can switch them with the originals one day.

With hundreds of thousands of British troops, I'd think this one got passed around, used, and deliberately adjusted for the circumstances. Or it's just a case of 'Chinese whispers' as it got passed between the units.

I often wonder at the attributions of some of these quotes. I think some quotes are really attributed to the first famous person that said it.

There's just not enough excellent quotes attributed to unknown or regular/common people, who outnumber the famous by 1000s to one.

On the other hand, there are famous people who were genuinely creative, and were a constant source brilliant quotes. Churchill being the obvious example.

Terry Pratchett has Sir Samaul Vimes say in Jingo, "The important thing in fighting is to make sure the other guy doesn't get up. Everything else is just decoration. (paraphrased). If you haven't read Pratchett, you are missing a great thing in this world.

I guess that depends on who is defining what's right. As far was we're concerned the Revolution of 1776 was right, while the Brits at the time were a little ticked off. :)

I've heard the same of of hand gernades.


"We'll see who is right and who is dead." Name that movie! I've found that when I'm looking for the enemy, I'm either right or dead. There isn't much grey area there.

Two toughts, both from Russia.

I was listening to two old veterns talk about the Afgan war. One asked the other, who was in the Russian Airforce about the effect the US supplied Stinger MANPADs had on their opperations. I chimed in that I thought the Stinger was primarily against choppers (really showed my ignorance there). The airman looked at me and said I'm also currently listening to a collection of military themed songs by the Russian group "Lyube." In a song entiled "Shagom Marsh" (Forward March) there is line that I'm loosely translating I wonder how many soldiers have felt like that before? Any russian out there that want to correct my translation, please feel free.
