Re: Digging in
You can't actually 'dig in' during a battle, because the game only simulates battles an hour or two in length, so you don't have time to dig fox holes, fill sand bags and gather logs for roofs etc.
But you can dig in units at their start point, during the deploy phase, if you are the defender in an assault/defend battle. There's an 'entrench all' button, 'E' shortcut key. You can also place defenses on a map, like trenches, fortifications, rough ground, stone buildings, which you can occupy during a battle, and get good protection from. When you first enter defensive terrain, you get only minimal protection, because you are moving. The next turn you will get additional protection, as you are settling in, and after (I think) two full move turns of not moving, your unit will get the full defensive value of the terrain. So staying stationary for over two full turns is a sort of 'digging in'. Hope this helps, Cross |

Thanks for that, gives me the information i wanted. :)

Re: Digging in
I should mention that I believe units actually get immediate full protection from trenches, as soon as they enter them. I think this is one of the benefits of trenches.
I should scour through the game guide and see if I'm right about all of the above, but I'm sure someone will correct me where I'm wrong. Cross |
Re: Digging in
You can't dig in during the game, but you can use tactics, technology and terrain to your advantage. To do this you need to know a few simple game terms.
Full stop - means no fast movement the turn before. No weapon accuracy penalty, no terrain protection penalty. Short stop - means fast movement the turn before but no movement on the current turn. Some penalty on weapon accuracy and terrain protection. Moving - means your unit has a specific velocity greater than 0.You are penalized, both by receiving greatly lowered terrain protection and receiving a much lower weapon accuracy rating. Penalization severity depends on velocity. A greater velocity receives greater penalty. Certain advanced technologies can overcome Short stop and Moving weapon accuracy penalty. Trenches can overcome Short stop and Moving terrain protection penalty. __________________________________________________ _______________ Now you know what to do to avoid penalties and give yourself the greatest advantage possible.
