Traits of Ignorance
 

I noticed with the latest, and probably with all versions of this game, that the install strongly suggests that you place the download in an alternate directory than the default one.

I ignored those instructions for every version of this game. So my question is what are the traits common to doing such a thing? I'm thinking it might make switching back and forth from winSPWW2 graphics less burdensome. Correct?

Not, it suggests that if you have the (unsupported by us - we have not downgraded from XP as yet) operating systems Vista/Windows 7, then you should install to a separate game folder outside of the O/S managed folders.

As already discussed in the vista/W7 (same O/S, different name) threads - these versions of windows can squirrel away files to strange places on a seeming whim. Such as installing the game to one place and then applying patches elsewhere. Unless you avoid their managed folder hierarchy by creating your own folder.

Interesting. I'm Vista 64 here. I'm not sure I've seen any mysterious file movement, apart from an entire program, or at least it's shortcuts being moved. I wonder if my current winSPWW2 is indicative of this sort of activity? What I find is a saved game folder, which has none of my saved games in it (seems my XP system did that too). If you go through the program to load the files there's no problem, but if you want to delete various entries in that folder you can't unless you know where they are. There are some ways to go about finding them I suppose, such as creating a new saved game, and then listing the latest files altered for the whole computer. You find that file and presumably you would find the other saved files. I guess some people would have trouble with that, and comparing that inconvenience to trying to break the age old habit of not having to worry about what the destination for new patches is, is quite a tossup. Then again, I suspect some people just always had a distrust of OS's, Vista or otherwise, and have always created their own paths.

Thanks for the answer, as at least I know that the issue wasn't related to performance, but just to possible file misplacements.
