Such sale made perfect sense.
Realize, they were selling surplus and hardly "state of the art" tanks to a country which was in no condition to employ them against Israel and which was busy fighting a war with Iraq.
A the time Iraq was a far more dangerous threat than Iran, since not only it could project at least some conventional forces against Israel in the event of an other regional war but had also a very active nuclear and missile program.
So such sale gained some money to Israel and contributed to bleeding dangerous Iraq: win win.
Don't be surprised, the Middle East makes for strange bedfellows.
