The difference between a "Bomb" a "Booby Trap" and an "IED" is...?
Going thru the various Booby Traps, Mines, and Molotovs in the OOBs I came across some "interesting" observations.
I'll use OOB 72 (Viet Cong) as a base-line. Since it's probably one of the most picked-over OOBs in the game, and has tons of IEDs. WEAPON CLASS 2 (Secondary Inf Weapon) Bomb: WC=2 Acc=15 Whd=10 HEP=18 HEK=20 APP=222 HEATP=16 Rng=1 Used by OOB 23 (NVA), 72 (Viet Cong) Bomb Variant: WC=2 Acc=15 Whd=10 HEP=15 HEK=20 APP=222 HEATP=15 Rng=1 Used by OOB 4 (Israel), 8 (PLO), 42 (Green), 43 (Red), 68 (Lebanon) Dynamite: WC=2 Acc=15 Whd=10 HEP=19 HEK=21 APP=222 HEATP=15 Rng=1 Used by OOB 22 (Mujahadeen), 26 (Afghanistan), 88 (Somalia) Other then the name and some minor stat differences the difference between a "Bomb" and "Dynamite" is...? Grenade Bundle: WC=2 Acc=3 Whd=5 HEP=2 HEK=7 APP=2 HEATP=2 Rng=1 Used by OOB 42 (Green), 43 (Red), 72 (Viet Cong) Improvised Bomb: Maybe rename this "IED" :D WC=2 Acc=15 Whd=10 HEP=15 HEK=20 APP=222 HEATP=15 Rng=1 Used by OOB 17 (Iraq) Hummm...aren't half the weapons in this list "Improvised Bombs"? Pole Mine: WC=2 Acc=12 Whd=10 HEP=10 HEK=6 APP=222 HEATP=18 Rng=1 Used by OOB 3, 4, 8, 14, 15, 23, 28, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 36, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 58, 59, 61, 62, 68, 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, 74, 77, 82, 83, 84, 85, 88, 89, 90, 91, 92 OOB 65 (Finland) calls it "Putkiraivain". Anti-Tank Mine: WC=2 Acc=12 Whd=10 HEP=9 HEK=6 APP=222 HEATP=20 Rng=1 Used by OOB 3, 8, 14, 22, 26, 36, 40, 42, 43, 47, 50, 56, 59, 62, 63, 67, 68, 75, 78, 81, 88, 90, 92 OOB 53 (Switzerland) has the "Pz Abw Mine" WC=3 Acc=30 Whd=8 HEP=3 HEK=10 APP=222 HEATP=40 Rng=1. OOB 65 (Finland) calls it "Kylkimiina". Personally I thought a "Pole Mine" was an "Anti-Tank Mine" on a pole used as an anti-tank weapon. Note the very minor differences in stats between them, same weapon with two different names? WEAPON CLASS 5 (Light Gun, autocannon, GMG, BMG) Booby Trap: OK, I'll admit a preference to this name over "HE Bomb", "HE Mine Trap" or "Shrapnel Mine". And if you look they're pretty much all the same! WC=5 Acc=25 Whd=5 HEP=1 HEK=15 APP=0 HEATP=0 Rng=1 Used by OOB 72 (Viet Cong) OOB 58 (Cambodia) calls it "Shrapnel Mine" Claymore Mine: WC=5 Acc=25 Whd=5 HEP=0 HEK=15 APP=0 HEATP=0 Rng=1 Used by OOB 7, 12, 13, 15, 20, 21, 23, 24, 27, 29, 30, 31, 42, 45, 48, 54, 56, 62, 68, 72, 73, 78, 83, 84, 86, 90, 91, 92 OOBs 2 (Poland), 22 (Mujahadeen), 36 (E Germany), and 49 (Cuba) call this the "MON-50 Mine". OOB 25 (Pakistan) calls it "P-5 Mine". OOB 38 (Hungary) calls it "MON-100 HE Mine". OOB 74 (Malaysia) calls it "ROK K440 Mine". OOB 88 (Somalia) calls it "Shrapnel Mine". HE Bomb: WC=5 Acc=25 Whd=2 HEP=1 HEK=15 APP=0 HEATP=0 Rng=1 Used by OOB 88 (Somalia) HE Mine Trap: WC=5 Acc=25 Whd=3 HEP=1 HEK=15 APP=0 HEATP=0 Rng=1 Used by OOB 70 (Chechnya) Frag Bomb: WC=5 Acc=25 Whd=5 HEP=2 HEK=15 APP=222 HEATP=2 Rng=1 Used by OOB 3 (Syria), 8 (PLO), 22 (Mujahadeen), 62 (Chad), 67 (Sudan), 68 (Lebanon), 72 (Viet Cong), 78 (Eritrea) One could wonder if there's an intentional difference between this and the "Booby Trap". WEAPON CLASS 8 (Infantry Flame) Fire Bomb: WC=8 Acc=25 Whd=35 HEP=10 HEK=25 APP=222 HEATP=10 Rng=1 Used by OOB 3 (Syria), 8 (PLO), 68 (Lebanon), 72 (Viet Cong), 78 (Eritrea) Fire BombVariant: WC=8 Acc=20 Whd=20 HEP=5 HEK=20 APP=222 HEATP=15 Rng=1 Used by OOB 42 (Green) and OOB 43 (Red) Fougasse: WC=8 Acc=20 Whd=55 HEP=11 HEK=110 APP=0 HEATP=25 Rng=1 Used by OOB 12 (USA) and OOB 13 (USMC) Fire Bomb by another name? Molotov: WC=8 Acc=12 Whd=3 HEP=4 HEK=4 APP=222 HEATP=9 Rng=1 Used by OOB 2, 4, 22, 26, 40, 42, 43, 47, 57, 60, 63, 66, 72, 64, 75, 81, 84, 88, 92 Molotov Variant: WC=8 Acc=20 Whd=20 HEP=5 HEK=20 APP=222 HEATP=15 Rng=1 Used by OOB 8 (PLO), 17 (Iraq), 50 (Algeria), 68 (Lebanon) |
Re: The difference between a "Bomb" a "Booby Trap" and an "IED" is...?
Since there is a patch coming out soon that will have real IEDs (demolition class and explosives ammo class as presently in WinSPWW2) then you will have a few more to muse over :)!. Plus some of the oddities in HEK etc may well have been addressed. If not, then next release.
Demolition (with a radio) can be remotely triggered (including by the AI), without it is only a trip hazard. Large demolitions can drop bridges. A demolition with a napalm chaser is a 'proper' fougasse. I have set up some AI picks in the new patch to buy some IEDS in the defence and sometimes other battles as well (PLO, Mujadeen, Iraqui insurgents, VC etc)... An infantryman with an explosives class 'suicide vest' is a suicide bomber. A 'fertiliser bomb' explosive charge on a truck is a suicide truck, and with a napalm chaser added, a suicide petrol tanker. As to existing items: A 'pole mine' is usually a shaped charge on a stick - at least for the WW2 Japanese lunge mine. A lot of the explosives in the OOB though were fanciful things the OOB designers added 10 odds years back as cute names for something that went 'bang', I think. So improvised close-assault A/T items, or added to fortifications as a close-in hazard. Andy |
Re: The difference between a "Bomb" a "Booby Trap" and an "IED" is...?
Oh boy !
Oh boy ! Oh boy ! The addition of the "Demolition" unit class will be VERY nice for dealing with such things. Hummm...all this came up when I was working on a scenario to "show off" my new USMC OOB...think I'll wait till the patch as this new unit class (plus some expected updates to the Iraq OOB) will be very useful. Thanks again. |
