I did this to get Dominions 3 on my netbook. By doing it this way, I have no start menu icons. So I pinned 'dom3' from the dominions3 folder to the start menu but when I launch Dominions 3 from the start menu I get that error. I can launch fine from the directory though.

There is also a (related?) problem with the background.

On my desktop PC there is a background. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I patched to the latest patch before running the game at all on the netbook.

It looks like you copied dom3.exe to start menu instead of making a shortcut of it. Naturally, there are no accompanying game files in there.

Either that, or "object" and "working folder" (as per winxp) properties of the shortcut have wrong data for some reason.

Possibly. I right clicked and pinned it to the start menu in Windows XP. I thought doing that effectively copied and pasted a shortcut. If not then that is definitely the problem.

The original dom3 file is an executable (.exe), not a shortcut (.lnk), so you have to "create a shortcut" from it (option 3 when r-clicked on) when one is needed, not copy and paste the file itself. Then you move the shortcut wherever it is needed (i.e. start menu or desktop or whatever).

Easy way is r-click and hold on dom3.exe in explorer, drag it to windows "start" button, hold until start menu opens, navigate it wherever you want the shortcut to be by waiting a couple of seconds for each submenu to appear (without ever releasing RMB throughout the whole ordeal) and finally drop it where needed. It will ask whether to copy, move or create a shortcut, choose the later. The shortcut will be created in a submenu of your choosing.
