No SAM for USA?
 

April 1960 campaign start, I can't find any SAM. USMC has, USA allies have, USA does not have?

USA SAM start in 8/60, USMC in 1/60. So buy an allied formation for now, we will add that one to investigation for the next year's patch.

That's because at least 6 years ago, and perhaps right back to the very first USA OOB for the first DOS version, so 10 years ago, the US SAM formation, and the HAWK SAM unit, were set up to enter service in August 1960.

Did the HAWK SAM actually only enter service with the US Army in August 1960 ? Maybe... maybe not. I won't know that until I dig into the issue later in the year. Usually when a specific date is used like August it's because someone had specific detailed information and January is used as a convenience when the actual month is unknown. Should the Nike-Hercules enter service in 1958 in the US OOB ? Probably since it enters service in 1958 with the USMC OOB even though the formation doesn't start until 1960.

I will make a note of these concerns, For now, borrow them from the Marines.

Given the info I'm finding now indicates the Hawk entered service with the US army "in 1959" and USMC "in 1960" it's probably a reasonably safe bet to assume the 8/60 date that's there now in the US OOB should be 8/59 and the formation pushed back to then as well but I will also dig into the Nike-Hercules sometime in the future

Thought I'd jump in before my bike ride this morning and after my passionate pleas for transport etc. of the PATRIOT units. This source shows NIKE-AJAX first battery became operational on
May 30, 1954.

NIKE-HERCULES was a further development of the N-AJAX that came into service on June 30, 1958. It should be pointed out that the Air Force opposed this system. They got their system built as well designated the BORMARC but in less numbers (sites) then the Armys N-HERC.

BORMARC was the Air Forces missile of choice that came with a conventional or nuke warhead (IM-99A/CIM-10A) operational from September 1959 - December 1964. It was replaced by the all nuke B version (IM-99B/CIM-10B) starting in June 1961 until retired in April 1972. This missile (B version.) was also deployed to Canada.

Note NIKE-AJAX last site, Norfolk VA. was deactivated in late 1963. NIKE-HERCULES last sites in Florida were deactivated in late 1979. Sorry for omission.

Well this is more in line with the original question, the HAWK missile appears to have entered service with the USA from
August 1959 to 1 April 1994 and March-April 1997 when the last ARNG HAWK battalion (Ohio) was deactivated. Replaced by the PATRIOT (For USA) and primarily by the STRINGER/AVENGER (For ARNG) missiles. It entered service with the USMC in 1960 and is still the primary battlefield system used by them currently. It has also been successfully used in an anti-ballistic missile role. It apparently has never been fired in anger by either service but, has a very successful record outside the U.S. (Israel and Kuwait)

Are you sure about that in terms if the US Marines? I figured they got rid of there's 10-12 years back.:confused: I did find this on wikipedia: United States US Marine Corps - (phased out of US service in 2002.

JohnAbrams21 I stand corrected and missed this in reviewing my own refs. Did some more digging and the "swag" seems to be late 2002 to early 2005 but most point to 2002. The loss of the HAWK III left the CORPS without a medium range system. This was later filled by the PATRIOT system hence I believe the "swag" in the dates by a couple of sources. The ARMY appears to be an allie in supporting the CORPS in maintaining a med to long range system, hence the MEADS system. MEADS is being jointly developed with Germany and Italy.
