Dominions sprites in higher resolution?

4 Attachment(s)
just for fun, i did a try to work on dominions units sprites in a higher resolution to see what can be done..

i made a few test on some C'tis units..

now, i'm wondering if the game engine / mod workflow can accept to put bigger TGA files for the units sprites or if it can't be done without altering the engine itself..

here are my first test at different resolutions outputs..

I don't think there's any reason that higher resolution sprites wouldn't be workable so long as they are sized similarly to normal sprites. Have you tried using those as units? They would need to be in .tga format, but I don't expect any difficulties.

Re: Dominions sprites in higher resolution?

Let's look at the modding helpfile:

Code:

6.5 #spr1 “imgfile”
The file name of the normal image for the
monster. The size of the image should be 8, 16,
32, 64 or 128 pixels wide/high. A human being
should be about 32 pixels high and there should
be 2 pixels of free space between his feet and
the bottom of the image. If the monster is to have
a shadow in the image, use the magenta color
(RGB 255, 0, 255) for shadow.

Means, unless we're speaking 'bout some old sprites taken from Dom1/2, which where 64 pixel originally, and resized for Dom3, you won't get better resolution then what is already present.

I havn't tested what happens if you use 256x256 pixel pics, but at best they get scaled down ... or they cause a nasty crash ;)

Re: Dominions sprites in higher resolution?

They are amazingly nice sprites! I am *extremely* impressed!

Regrettably they can't be used in dom3. All sprites are the same resolution in dom3 - if you use more pixels, you just get a bigger creature.

The only pseudo-exception is that dom1/dom2 sprites were originally a lower resolution, but have been resized for dom3. Hence they have the correct number of pixels but do not make use of them well (groups of nearby pixels are all the same colour).

Indeed, very nice work!

Given the effort and quality of the above srpites, I would love to see you help with the dominions 3 sprite enhancement mod, sorting out some of the sprites left over from dom2 which really are low res.

Example - EA Ermor standard bearer.

Okay, we have learned not to trust me when it comes to matters of spriting :D

linlin, your sprites are really good.
I think it's a great idea for you to share your talent with the sprite enhancement mod artists.
Artists of dominions sprites unite!
Who cares about dom-4 if we'll get such a quality of sprites with the mod ;)
