Noob trying to understand defence

Hello, i'm learning the game and have a question i cannot answer.
If i build a a Rampard it says it has a defence value of 100. Then, in the province part of the screen there's defence+/-.
Does this mean that if i build the rampard the defence goes to 100 and then i put 10 points and it goes to 110??

Thanks a lot for any help :)

2 different things. They do not add.

Defence of the castle is the strength of the walls. There is a formula given in the manual on how armies tear down castles. Easiest way to remember it is basically take how many troops are inside the fortress and subtract their number from the sieging army. If the sieging army is bigger, it will do damage to the fortress. In the case of a def 100 fortress, the army needs to do 100 points of damage to the wall thru the siege. Now, the formula is more complicated than what I described its something like taking str of troops, flying ability (bonus) animal or mindless ability (penalty) in to affect.

Excellent answer.

To build on that abit. The Castles defence is the castle walls. The PD is the province defence. Think of a province as being as large as a county or district. So the PD is local militia which help out to try and keep your province from being invaded. They will be assisted by any troops you have "patrolling" the province.

THEN separately is the attack on the castle. That will include the people who had the order to defend the castle and those who were working in the lab

Thanks a lot for the answers. That's why my "castle building" program was not having a great success :)
I think i'll start building PD too....

Unless the province has a fortification, commanders set to "Defend" will also fight with the PD, no?

Any commanders and units in an unfortified province will fight alongside the PD. In a fortified province, only patrollers will fight.

Unless they're sneaky commanders, then they have to not be set on "hide" to participate.
