Unwanted Lesser Air Elementals

I have Caelum's Eagle Kings with 2 air gems each.
First of all, the program goes off script and the EK's summon one LAE each. These were not scripted at all, and there were other commands on the script - yet to be run. But I understand this sometimes happens....
But secondly, I am charged 2 air gems each! While it should only be one air gem.

Is this a bug? Now I'm afraid to let the EKs carry gems because they may all disappear.

The mages very often use more gems than needed in order to reduce fatigue. If they had spent 1 gem, they'd have reached 100 fatigue and more or less been out for the rest of the fight. With 2 gems, the ai cuts down the fatigue to 50 and thus can keep them casting spells.
The best thing to do imo when you want to know what the ai "wastes" is to playtest it yourself beforehand. I realsied that an S9 pretender would happily pay 3 gems for a magic duel for instance...

check your script.
Mostlikely you are trying to cast a spell where the victim is out of range.

When there is a spell on the script that cannot be used (potential targets are out of range, or immune, or the buff has already been applied), the AI will pick another spell to replace it in the script. If your mage is holding gems, it can be a spell that uses gems. I've seen Arrow Fend casted by mage-thugs who were scripted for Blessing because all sacreds on the battlefield had already been blessed.

The lesson here is don't give mages gems they can't use. It's better to have a scout sneak alongside them holding gems, and you can transfer between when they're needed.

You can also give your mages a few extra gems, and even script them so that they won't use the gems until the script is done... and then wait and see what happens. They will surely spend the gems, if they live long enough. But on what? It's a fun surprise! :)

...Unless they just use the gems to reduce fatigue incurred by Raise Skeletons or something. :(

In this case, they used the two gems to reduce fatigue. I'm short of air gems, so it hurt.
Thanks for the clarifications, and suggestions - Jorus
