How to create a campaign?

This is my first try at creating a campaign, so i want ti hear from you some advice, and some links to tutorials etc.

I wish to make a campaign in 1989 where the Soviet Union invades Yugoslavia. So any advice would be good.

Hah lots of time & patience, depending on how real you want it check google earth for likely routes, cities airbases etc & plan battles before start it having a good idea where it is going.
Your proposed forces for it to be any good either the player has to be Yugoslavia or if Russian say a Mech formation with tanks or SPATGMs in support.
No MBT the AIs armour will be cannon fodder T-62 should be the best tank available for human use.

1) decide if you are going to make a linear progressive campaign, or a branching one (much more work, but more satisfying!)

2) Read the game Guide section on the subject, and keep reading it :)!

3) Also, once you have read about the campaign editor in the GG, then open up the existing campaigns and see how the other guys have done it in theirs. Also, look at their supporting documents etc.

4) then test each scenario in a separate test harness campaign rig you set up consisting of precisely 1 battle (the scenario under test) - since that is really the only way to test supporting auxiliary troops etc.

5) Test your campaign right through at least once when complete.

6) Ask questions here, the other guys who have made one will try to help.

Be prepared for a long process (You should design each scenario separately, and play test it individually with the designed AI forces, and what you think the human will have by that campaign point. Once you are happy - link it into the appropriate branch).

I have one I am working on as a back burner item - "On To Kampala" dealing with Idi Amin's abortive invasion of Tanzania (as Tanzania). Only 2 battles done so far in a year or so, but it may get released some day :)!

Oh yes - 1(B) - write out a time-line for your campaign, either linearly or as a flow chart (if branching) on a sheet of paper.

Mine is very rough notes in a TXT file (with any references in there as well). Some small possible branches, but mainly linear progression:

On to Kampala! - T v U LC
repair - very little (T has no resources), fixed support
1) Amin Attacks! - Kyaka (town)
hastily rallied T militia delay v Ugandan attack
T Delay V U Advance
- small fixed core (+ 1 saba saba (BM21))
some militia as fixed auxiliaries in town
2) Ugandans out
Counterattack by T vs U forces
(T assault V U Defend)
tanzanian expansion - give some points for armoured core
(advise scorpions?)
defeat - lose
3) Into Uganda
border skirmish - T advance v U Delay
defeat - lose
4) Battle of Lukaya 1
Meeting attack T vs Libya Armoured
-- 4.1) lose - delay at Masaka
---- Lose 4.1 -> end campaign
win (either) -> 5
5) Lukaya 2
T advance v Libya + uganda Delay
-- 5.1) lose -> delay at masaka
---- lose 5.1 -> end in defeat
win (either) -> 6
6) Entebbe airfield
T advance V U (+some L?) delay
7) Kampala outskirts
T advance V U (+some L?) Delay

Ask questions if you have them, and you will have questions. :up:

When playtesting - save your games just before the end of each scenario. One save for each scenario. It will allow you to do changes to scenarios and start/end txt files, and test them without having to play through the entire campaign.

Re: How to create a campaign?

Does anyone know of a quicker way to assign the entry turn for reinforcements? I have been doing it one at a time, and the "A" key doesn't appear to help with the turn of entry function.

Re: How to create a campaign?

You do it one unit at at time.

The "A" key is only for moving all units of a formation together in an AI-controlled mess during game play.

Thanks. More respect than ever to these guys creating big scenarios with lots of reinforcements.
