Tech question: DirectX and hardware support

If a video card has hardware support for an older Version of DirectX, can installing a newer Version do anything that can damage the card?

My instincts say it can't, but the video card I recently replaced blew out immediately after I installed DirectX 8.0, which makes me leery of upgrading again.

I have never heard of it. In fact I have several older cards here and always update to the newest Versions of DirectX without any problems.

Thanks; that's reassuring. The replacement card has GeForce 2 chips and DirectX 6 support. (I figured with GeForce 4 being out now, a G2 would be really cheap.) Now I can reinstall one of my DirectX 7 games.

There is DirectX 8 out there and you should download this one. I had a GF2, too, and it worked like a charm with DirectX 8.

Re: Tech question: DirectX and hardware support

When I tried to install DirectX from the video card's drivers CD, I got an error message that Win95 doesn't support 8.0. I've also had a tech support person tell me that, but I didn't believe him, because I've got at least two games that list Win95 and DirectX 8.0 in the system requirements.

At the moment, I'm having trouble installing a game that only needs DirectX 6.0, which the video card manual claims it does support.

Installing a game that included DirectX 7 drivers worked, and also solved the problem with the other game's installer.
