Gifting Planets??
My partner and I in one game were considering gifting one another some planets. The reason for this is i have hydrogen as my racial atmosphere ane he has oxygen. So we figured by gifting the planets to one another they'd be more useful as each of us could build more facilities on the other planet. True?
The question that comes to mind though is whether the planets will become "un-domed".. or do we need to shuttle population to them first? Or what would be involved in getting to where i obviously want to be (a planet where i can build a lot more facilities on it). Is this even a good idea? thanks much! |
Re: Gifting Planets??
The owner of a planet doesn't matter, it is the population of the planet.
If you did gift each other planets, you would still have to shuttle the correct-breathing population to the planets. Consider the following: Trade (or gift) a loaded population transport with your ally. He can populate any of his hydrogen planets with your race, and you can populate any of your oxygen planets with his race. |
Re: Gifting Planets??
thats a good suggestion..
what happens if planet A has my friend's race on it and it's domed and he gifts it to me. Do i have to kill his population first before unloading mine on the planet in order to be able to make in un-domed? Ditto if he gift's me a pop transport with his race. Do i need to be careful to colonize a new planet without any of my own population before dropping off his people onto it? Is it possible to have a combination of two races on a single planet? |
Re: Gifting Planets??
And to answer the second part of your question, Yes, this is a good idea. In fact, it is a VERY good idea. That is one of the first things I try to trade for when encountering a new empire. Trading populations is the easiest way to increase your productivity as it requires no new colonies, if you are in a tight game that doesn't have a lot of room for expansion.
Very good idea. Nick (bearclaw) |
Re: Gifting Planets??
You can have more than one race on a planet, but if any one of those can't breath the atmosphere, it will be domed. Personally, I think it should be determined by the population that is in the greatest numbers on the planet. As it is right now, If I've got an oxygen homeworld with 2 billion people and I remove 1 million to add 1 million hydrogen breathers, then the planet becomes domed.
Also, I think that domed planets should make a difference in combat. If a domed planet is being bombarded from space, then if any of the weapons were to hit the dome, the population would be screwed. Perhaps making population attacks do more damage on domed worlds would be more realistic. |
Re: Gifting Planets??
If I gift a planet to an alley, is there an easy way for him to eject the population? I think i've read a bit of this before and that the answer is essentially no. The best suggestion i recall was to use a pop transport to grab the population and then eject them into space. That wouldn't be TOO hard but still involves building the ship, moving it there (empty), and doing it. Then you'd have to go get some population (or have a 2nd ship arrive) and drop it off.

Re: Gifting Planets??
If you gift a planet to the alley, the garbage man is liable to get it in the morning.
<sorry, I couldn't resist> |
Re: Gifting Planets??
All you need to do is bring a cargo ship and load it with population then jetteson them. bwahahahahaha...

Re: Gifting Planets??
No, no no no no no...
Don't JETTISON their population. They now belong to your empire, and you don't want to kill them. Just move your population onto the planet from your transport, then move the alien population from the planet to your ship. They are now YOURS. You can transport them to your other worlds that breathe Oxygen (that up to this point have been domed), put them on the planet, and then relocate your current population to another planet. They are still YOUR planets, they just have an alien race living there. And magically, a Huge-sized domed planet that had space for 5 facilities now has space for 25 facilities!!! The reason I suggested trading TRANPORTS instead of trading PLANETS is simply logistics. I would rather have all my planets in my existing systems populated with races that can actually breathe the air (and therefore not have domed colonies) than have several planets spread throughout the galaxy in my ally's space (who could become my enemy, of course). Slightly off topic: Population is a valuable asset. The higher your population, the better your resource production and shipyard build rate. (See table below) I currently have one of my planets with over 6000 (million) population, and the bonus is +70% !!! My shipyard II can crank out over 4400 per turn, and over 6600/turn in emergency mode!! (Let's see what happens when I upgrade it to a Shipyard III... Oooo. The upgrade will only take 1 turn http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/icons/icon10.gif !! ) Here are the correct bonus levels: Min Pop--Bonus % to resource production and build rate: 100--5% 500--10% 1000--20% 2000--30% 3000--40% 4000--50% 5000--60% 6000--70% 7000--80% 8000--90% bonus (this is the max pop on a huge-sized, non-domed planet) Hope this helps clarify. Re: Gifting Planets??
Jettisoning population should have a bad impact on politics and/or internal affairs. But it doesn't AFAIK...
