Upgrading unit "A0"

When playing a generated campaign, do you upgrade you headquarters unit into another type of unit? If yes, what type of unit do you normally change it into?

I normally upgrade mine to a lightly armored scout/recon vehicle. It gives me some protection and I can move with my forces.

Hi.
It can be a good choice. The downside of that is that this is more visible. One option is to buy a vehicle for the headquarters, and it off the car when necessary.

I tend to stick the HQ unit in one place and never move it. Usually far away from any fighting.

I used to buy a vehicle to carry it, then I noticed how others doing the same found themselves in an interesting spot after a maverick maverick destroyed the vehicle with the HQ.

As for actual upgrade of the unit itself, I don't play that long (time frame) campaigns to feel any need to upgrade the HQ.

Good stuff. Thanks for the replies. I have tried making it an ADA vehicle only to have it targeted by a SEAD strike. I like using the recon vehicle just so I may move it forward. I have never purchased it its own transportation. I think I will do that with the next generated one.

The HQ Unit Class is also a form of artillery observer - so changing the A0 from that loses you the artillery spotter abilities.

Vehicles are also more easily spotted, and so more vulnerable. The 6 man infantry unit default at least has a chance of surviving a hit or 2. And making the CIC a scout helo is inviting disaster! ... :).

In a LC, if you lose the command unit, the campaign is over (other than PBEM LCs - a special case). It represents you.

Losing the A0 is a major morale hit to your forces, and also it represents the rear-link in comms so calling off-map units may be more difficult if it's routed or dead. (More chance of off-map elements being out of communications).

The HQ unit (whatever you change it to should you do so) is really supposed to be left to the rear, out of danger and not unduly risked. It is almost like the King in chess.

So it is best left to the rear, away from any other unit that may draw fires (e.g arty or AAA), perhaps on a hill top to act as another arty spotter. Its arty skill level will increase over the campaign, the more times you use it as a spotter to call in fires.

Cheers
Andy

In a long campaign it's usualy my only arty spotter - I found it's its best use.
Btw, why can't th HQ unit not been upgraded into a newer HQ unit (at least I think it can't) This way my HQ runs around with rifles from the 50s al the years (until 2020)...

HQ's should never be used as a "fighting force" other than plotting atry and rallying so whether they have SAW's, mmgs ect.or just the old rifles and grenades is not important, a non issue,
If you are getting your HQ attacked, then you must have messed up somewhere somehow;)
