Loading small vehicles into big helicopters

Playing as Britain, I was hoping to load a light fighting force into chinooks, including some small light vehicles like the quad bike ammo carrier and land rovers, but they are apparently too heavy.

Is this correct (in both game terms and reality)? I thought you could squeeze a land rover into a chinook, but I'm happy to be corrected.

I did find a relevent forum post discussing this, but the problem there was the other way; heavy helos could carry too much, and people were exploiting that.

Re: Loading small vehicles into big helicopters

For helicopters to carry heavy items like vehicles the carry capacity has to begin with a 2, i.e, a number over 200.

The British Chinook carry capacity is 144 so it can't carry small vehicles. In the USA OOB the carry capacity is 244 so the American Chinook could carry the load you want.

So you could use Mobhack to edit the carry capacity of the UK Chinook to be 244 and that will solve your problem.

cheers,

Tim

Excellent, thank you!

Next question though, is this deliberate, or a just an over-sight?

Cheers!

I'm not sure why the UK Chinooks Should carry less, there might be a valid reason or mistake in the UK OOB.

A simplier way is to just buy them from the U.S.:)

I've made the mods now, thanks, so I'm merrily inserting small mobile teams around a large map to my hearts content!

Now I've done those mods, however, I may be getting carried away; does anyone know if it is possible to fit one of the UKs Jackals into a chinook? (Real life I mean, the game is quite happy with it now I've reset the carry capacity)

In short no, Supracat did however tender the LIMAWS-R MLRS which had completed trials in 2005 which included a CH-47 "sling lift" but the program was canceled in 5/2008 by UK MOD. Let's remember less armor weight here as well.

What hurt the JACKAL from the start was the engine and frontal armor causing an "unbalanced" load. This only got worse with the JACKAL 2 and the JACKEL 2a currently being used as battlefield conditions warranted heavier armor protection all around so helos are out, the C-130 and I believe the C-27J are about as small as you'll get. All you need to know about the JACKAL below.

We're not sure why the Brit ( and Pakistani ) Chinooks differ so much from the norm but we do know it's been that way for at least 7 years so it's an issue that been around for awhile and this is the first mention of it I am aware of. That said we will be looking into it

Well to understand the whole issue it would help to understand the "bird" in question as well. The ref says it'll fit 2 HMMWVs but I believe the JACKAL is both wider and taller so it might not fit into the ramp opening. It does provide load weights but these are for the newer U.S. CH-47E/F versions. And the answer to the UK CH-47 lift issue is in the "related links" section concerning an engine upgrade, crash and MK 3 version going to Afghanistan. This goes back to the ? I had on the UK PUMAS that got new engines last year at the same time. With helos it's about PTLS, Power, Tilt, Lift and Speed basically.
http://www.airforce-technology.com/projects/chinook/
Next covers more on the older versions.
http://www.military-today.com/helico...47_chinook.htm

Ref B does indicate a max. payload of 10.3 tons, and does give the RAF payloads in kg for the MK 1 versions, again see the first ref as noted. I suspect (And hope!) someone did the math correctly in dealing with standard weight&metric conversions for load capacity assuming yes, this looks more like an issue ICO the UK a couple of mods to reflect both the CH-47HC MK2 and current CH-47HC MK3 versions into the game. If weights are messed up...well that'll be a big mess, but I've always been an optimist.

Pat

Sorry Don, it does feel like nit-picking bringing up things like this, but I only noticed because of the ammo carrying quad bike. Since you put those into the game, my infantry don't leave home without one!

Cheers!

Re: Loading small vehicles into big helicopters

I remember seeing the big Iraqi Army helicopters when I was over there, some kind of gigantic, probably Russian-built thing. The undersides were painted blue and the belly had a big Iraqi flag painted on it. The cargo bay was massive, and had a DShK hanging out of it. Looked like you could have parked a Bradley in it. I always wondered what those things were.
