Moving from Windows to Linux Question
My hate-hate affair with Vista (no love here, just hate) is once again driving me back to Ubuntu.
Apart from web browsing, the program I use most on my (currently Vista) PC is Dom3, which I purchased and downloaded via a web download link from Shrapnel. Is it legally possible to get a copy of the Linux version of Dom3, and then plug in my current licence key (which I did pay good money for) to get it up and running? If not, I am tempted to try running it under Wine, although there is something very unclean (indeed, nasty) about running the Windows version of a game developed on Linux and ported to Windows on linux under Wine (bleck). |
Re: Moving from Windows to Linux Question
AFAIK the digital download version is operating system specific, whereas the CD version contains all the versions for the different operating systems.
So run it under Wine. |
Re: Moving from Windows to Linux Question
I found a link to in the Wine app DB, which looks promising:
Dom3 on Wine So yeah, as you say it looks like Wine is the way to go. I'll start with a dual boot of Linux, and then install Dom3 under Wine and see how it goes. |
Re: Moving from Windows to Linux Question
You could also contact Shrapnel and see if they can help you out.
I don't really see why they wouldn't be willing to let you have both versions. The worst they can say is no. |
Re: Moving from Windows to Linux Question
Is there an Linux Demo? I got the Impression using the key on the demo and downloading the patches is funcionally the same as the full version.
Didn't try it myself, so I'm not shure. |

Re: Moving from Windows to Linux Question
It might:re: be possible that Shrapnel will be good enough to allow you to download the Linux version, hopefully for free if you already bought the Windows version. The game (I have played both versions) is identical on both systems (haven't tried in on a Mac).

Re: Moving from Windows to Linux Question
They don't, I tried that already myself. You need to buy the CD if you want to play on multiple OSs.

Re: Moving from Windows to Linux Question
Well, there's always wine...
I did buy the CD, and I'm certainly glad I did. |
