Question on weapon platforms and troops..

Do they HAVE to have a black background? I find that I am having trouble with my models being dark on a black background getting "lost".

on weapons platforms and troops, you often seen a patch of ground underneath them, and perhaps black background around and above the patch of ground. just make the patch of ground bigger, so more of the moddel is against that instead of the background.
