Vine Arrow

Does vine arrow have to do damage to entangle its target?

Re: Vine Arrow

Nope

Re: Vine Arrow

So against single targets it is in every way superior to tangle vines or earthgrip (the earth version of the tangle spell- whatever its called)?

Re: Vine Arrow

Nope, iirc you still need to hit. (A shield could stop the vine arrow).

Spells with flysprites can be stopped by shields iirc. (I don't really have a lot of knowledge about this so I could be wrong).

So tangle vines is more likely to hit. Earth grip is E, not N, so it is a different path for the same type of spell. All of them are SC stoppers. (Unless the SC has quickness, then you are hosed) ;).

But I think I have seen a vine arrow kill one unit and then entangle on other, but I don't know if I just dreamed that.

Re: Vine Arrow

Okay, on a related note. The function of shields that prevents an arrow striking is its 'parry' correct? so except for shields, what else provide parry? Main-gauche? anything else?

Re: Vine Arrow

I'm fairly sure only shields can parry. Internally, parry is just a shields defence value (shields also have a negative defence modifier but this comes from encumbrance).

manual p 77 (MISSILE COMBAT)
Quote:

Attacker: DRN + (Size points in the square) +2 if magic weapon
Defender: 2 + DRN + (shield parry value x2) – (Fatigue / 20)
Not sure how accurate that is anymore.

There's a spell flag, "Misses do nothing" that might correspond to this:

I'd be interested to know the meaning of this flag for certain... I'm guessing that it means the spell uses missile weapon rules.

Re: Vine Arrow

if you want to get around the 'quickness issue', is it possible to earthmeld and entangle the same opponent simultaneously? One gives the 'entangle' effect and the other the 'earth grip' effect, so they should stack right?

Re: Vine Arrow

I dont know if they stack.

Even if they don't throwing as much hold spells on a SC as possible is usually wise.

(Best one, petrify death on mr failure, hold still on mr succes).

Re: Vine Arrow

Vine whip and vine bow gained AoE with CBM 1.8x

However the AoE was removed in CBM 1.9x from vine whip. Vine bow kept it would seem.

Since the vine effect on bow is AoE, that would be an undodge-able vine if it hits the cell.

And remember, when in doubt, test it!

Edit: Disclaimer - I have not tested vine bow in 1.92.
