Arty and craters

Is it possible that artillery of 105mm caliber be able to form craters? I think that kind of arty, though considered light nowadays can make a pretty moon landscape with a few rounds.

For what it's worth......

http://www.winterwar.com/Weapons/artyinfo.htm#crater

and we lowered the incidence of cratering a couple years back so you get some cratering at 122 mm and a 122mm crater is twice the size of a 105mm crater

Craters in the game hinder movement and provide some infantry cover, the rather small ones created by 105's really wouldn't have that effect.

Unless of course you're talking a WW I scenario where they've been pounding the same ground for weeks.

Actually I had those Korean War/ Vietnam war scenarios, where you can have intense shelling of weapons of that caliber and the environment looking good as new. I also remember playing a generated campaign against the AI in which when the AI assaulted, it bought huge amounts of 105mm arty (me as USSR, it as Sweden in 1960). So it made barrages that would make a WW1 veteran feel like home, yet the only sign of the carnage was some smoke and maybe some burned trees.
Anyway the site Imp posted is very interesting. And I must admit the only arty craters I've ever seen were made by 155mm rounds or mortars, so I may have a distorted view of the destruction a 105mm round can make.
And while we're at it, 100mm rounds from ships DO cause craters, interestingly enough...

Small fry really try adding 30 turns to the start of the battle using arty only, that would chew up the earth. Picture is of Brtish arty cases in Korea being moved by non combat personnel to keep the area round the tubes clear. If you see photos of Russian arty parks after Kursk they are waist high as far as you can see.

If you read the MOBHack help file under Warhead Size Chart regarding naval artillery you'll discover why that is happening. ( hint, crater creation is tied to warhead size naval shells tend to be heavier than land gun shells and get a warhead size boost becasue of it)
