40mm GLs
Does anyone know ( know..... not guess, I can guess ) what a "typical" ammo loadout would be for under gun integrated 40mm GL's ?
I need to know roughly what the typical HE/ HEAT carried ammo ratio would be where HEAT rounds are available and it would be more helpful to hear from someone who may have actually used one. Don |

I attached a 2003 US Army report on combat loads in Afghanistan.
Says the Grenadier would carry one 40mm in the weapon plus 24-26 assorted grenades. Pg.20 The ammo types were later listed as: WP HE (assume this includes HEDP) Smoke Pg.109 The report also said that the 60mm Mortar Section Leader would carry a M4 Carbine with UGL, with one grenade in the weapon plus 18 grenades. Pg.63 Cross |
Re: 40mm GLs
BTW, any chance of having UGL equipped units be able to put a smoke on longer distances?

Re: 40mm GLs
An M79 grenadier carried about 36 rounds. Typically 24 HE, 3-6 smoke, 3-6 flare/signal, 3-6 HEDP, 3-6 shotshell.
The M79 was often used for target marking for airstrikes and battlefield illumination. With the advent of the M203 they tended to carry only 18-24 rounds; rarely any smoke or flare rounds, and obviously no shotshell. At about the same time the pop-up flare/smoke was developed so they were no longer used for target marking. With 3 x M203's per squad that would be 54-72 per squad. In the USA 40mm rounds come in 3's in the carrying bandoleer. So obviously ammo load would be some multiple of 3. FYI - Belted 40mm generally has one HEDP round per three HE. |
